Golazo 05-17-2004, 12:36 PM this is like Nintendo Power.
does anyone think there was even a remote chance of Colusus being negative/not fawning at the mouth?
KillerONE 05-17-2004, 01:02 PM People openly accept the bad reviews as truth and jump on the T:V is gonna suck bandwagon. But the second a favorable review is reported.. OMG IG FANBOYZ!!!
If you actually read Colosus review, you'd see that he both liked and disliked things. He gave a fair review, versus an obviously biased, disgruntled review (Musashi).
I don't think Colusus's review is favorable or negative. More, informative and helpful.
Imposter 05-17-2004, 01:03 PM I don't think 7/10 is fawning at the mouth poodle boy. Col pointed out a a few things he didn't like.
Silence 05-17-2004, 01:03 PM its a linear relationship to the previous velocity, however the end result is an exponential increase in speed, eg. 2x previous would give you:
1 2 4 8 16 32 64 ...
ie. 2^n, where n is the number of times you hit the pad
its exponential, with base being the linear multiplier factor each time you hit the pad.
colosus was right ;)
I don't really understand what you mean with 'number of times you hit the pad.' Do you mean when you vertically jump up and down? Otherwise how can you hit a pad multiple times if you're moving in a straight line?

Multiple pads? They are deployable as well as stationary.

I didn't realize if you didn't say "This game sucks donkey balls" it was cosidered fawning at the mouth. I gave my opinion. I'm impressed by what stands, some things need to be changed (and already are being changed according to KP) and I am cautiously optimistic.
Sorry for providing constructive feedback. Next time I'll write two reviews, one for people who actually care what I have to say about the game and one for people that just want me to say "It sucks like T2".
D-Sect 05-17-2004, 01:34 PM It was good and you offered ideas on how to fix things and didn't kiss ass. Honesty pays.
Sojourn 05-17-2004, 01:45 PM Thanks for the review, Matt. It was a good read, and cleared up a few questions I had. Wish I could have gone to E3 and hadn't been so busy recently. :( Maybe Thrax will need a focus test soon. ;)
Vermouth 05-17-2004, 01:49 PM good review.
i think the fawning fufu is referring to is that you rarely (or never?) called anything outright bad. the good things were glowingly outstanding, while the bad things seemed to be "they might want to perhaps slightly reconsider how this works... maybe"
don't be afraid to call a spade a spade if you weren't digging it ;)
thanks for the review tho, looks good!

Because the changes aren't necessary for a fun game, they are just thoughts on how it could be BETTER. It was mainly balance issues which I will bring up more during beta. *shrug* You don't have to call a spade a spade if it already knows it's a spade. You can simply guide it along the path you want it to take.
taoofjord 05-17-2004, 02:12 PM Was there ever a time they didn't have a lot to prove?
Let's see... Sequel comes out and blows for a majority of players. Development team is fired. Irrational is hired with little to no FPS experience. Second sequel is put into production and it is decided to make a whole new type of game.
It seems like their entire history has been trying to prove themselves. They shouldn't HAVE to. They owe you nothing and are making a great game from where I sit. If you don't like it, don't play it. Simple as that.
System Shock 2 does not = little to no FPS experience. (If IG Australia is, indeed, the team that made it.) SS2, is one of the best pc games ever made.

1) I wouldn't really consider SS2 an FPS in the same category, but whatever.
2) I believe the Boston team was mainly responsible for that.

Did someone call my name?
LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAA!
Do we know all the weapons by now?

Yeah, now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure the IG team that worked on system shock 2 is making SWAT 4 right now. Ah well :p
I still have faith in irrational :)
This must mean that this is IG Australia's first game?

No, they made Freedom Force
Zoolooman 05-17-2004, 03:04 PM Freedom Force is a good game. It was worth four times as much as the 10 buck price at Fry's.
taoofjord 05-17-2004, 03:57 PM No, they made Freedom Force
Then theres a third team making the sequel? :O
Colosus 05-17-2004, 04:05 PM Then theres a third team making the sequel? :O
No. The australian team is huge.
Stage01 05-17-2004, 04:12 PM good Review
FreshMeat 05-17-2004, 04:50 PM Great Review Colosas...I'm a bit envious! Here are my two cents worth.
Your rating (7 of 10).
That is pretty sweet that you have the confidence to rate an alpha version of the game that high! With 5+ months left to release, there should be plenty of time to put together an awesome game after all the kinks have worked out to earn a higher rating.
My only concern is, that it doesn't matter how good a game is, it just takes a couple of cheeters to ruin it. (At least for me). I purchased Unreal Tournament 2004 this weekend, so I can get used to the game engine (in preperation of T:V), and it is rabid with blatant cheeting. I know that you can't stop all kinds of cheeting, but I truly hope that they can work out some kind of checks and ballances thing (that can be updated regularly) to help in keeping the game a pure as possible. I'm starting to get tired of spending $50 on a video game only to not get to enjoy it because cheeters taking over gaming servers.
The Grapling Hook.
That is pretty sweet. From what I have read in this post, it sounds like a bunch of people will be able to attach the grappling hook on the Flying Ball and be towed from one side of the map to the other? Personally I think that is really cool. I hope that stays in the game, as it would add a huge team dynamic.
The Physics.
Personally, I hate T1's physics, I prefer T2's better. I have been playing a little T1 as of late (just to see if I could be coax to change my mind), however, I can't help but feel so very boxed in while jetting... rather the T1 engine feels too 2 dimentional, and lacks perspective. I don't want to float down, but I don't want to drop like a rock either. Can there be an in between? I like T2 Classic, but even the smallest drops can cause damage.
The Weaponry
This sound likes the new weapons are gonna add a whole new dynamic to the game. If what is being said about the Spinfusor is true, (about it being slow), I hope it gets fixed. There was nothing wrong with the Spinfusor in T2. I don't see the need for the change.
Jumping...
Jump and jet, space bar and right mouse, the perfect combination. Please leave it alone.
Still can't wait to play the Beta, keep up the great work!
