mrkshammerhand 05-17-2004, 04:40 AM wow col
thanks for the ten page effort
and thank you irrational for getting me excited about future gaming.
I rarely play much anymore.
I played T2 for three days straight... when it first came out... almost on my 37th birthday.
T1 still works better but they were both fun. I even had fun with my newbie friend in war 2003.
Darkfire 05-17-2004, 05:33 AM Gj Colosus, nice read :D
WinterFreshX 05-17-2004, 06:57 AM Colusus stop complaining about not having the game infront of you :p, at least you got to play it for some time lol.
Great review though I must say.
AeoIus 05-17-2004, 07:02 AM Yep, the game seems to be fun, which is all I ask for :D
Liked the review, movie was even better :D
As it is now I can see myself enjoying the game already. It can only get better with the proposed tweaks, so I've got my hopes up and will start saving the money :D
ArkhoN 05-17-2004, 07:04 AM Good read I agree, not many news though.
NAT Mav 05-17-2004, 07:17 AM Good read. I think we're all worried about the physics though from the videos. That's a real gamebreaker there if they can't get it right, but I'm sure they can with KP's insight.
P.S. Col did you get my PM about ^3?
Theta 05-17-2004, 07:28 AM I thought you said the comps were using 9600XTs. I was hoping a 9600XT would be good enough to play this at high FPS. :(
Tekno 05-17-2004, 07:29 AM gay :closet:
The sniper rifle has also been changed in this version of Tribes. It now uses energy as well as ammunition, thus limiting the old days of infinite fire for the sniper rifle. The energy still plays a role in how much damage the weapon does. The more energy you use the more damage it causes. The sniper rifle is a light-only weapon.
Imposter 05-17-2004, 07:55 AM God I wish I could play this game now. I'm at the point where I'm tired of hearing about it and just want the damn thing.
Good write-up col.
nSpectre 05-17-2004, 08:05 AM Perrin']Damn, 2 out of the three without hitting the right guy. :p

Chadman 05-17-2004, 08:13 AM Losing to Dev team was not all that bad..Colusus doing his Heavy on Chair impression during the wofn cast was the highlight for me!
/cue hysterical giggling
Member 05-17-2004, 08:13 AM wouldn't it work to have the grapple disconnect when you jet? or do you still have use for jetting while connected?
edit: oh, and great review Colosus :)
Spoonkill 05-17-2004, 10:32 AM Someone asked earlier and I did'nt see it answered...
Are there still generators and do they power the base turrets and inv stations?

Good write-up col.
Got Haggis? 05-17-2004, 10:33 AM yeah, great review...
Shoddy 05-17-2004, 11:09 AM I am describing the speed related to the previous speed, yes. I thought that's how they said it worked. The faster you hit it, the more boost it gave?
What are you talking about the number of times you've gone over the pad? I never saw anything about the number of times someone has used the pad being a factor in the boost it gave.
Imagine an extensible tube with a catapult in it. Use your example of exit speed from a catapult is twice incoming speed. So, you go in the tube at speed "1", you come out at "2".
Now add a second catapult to the tube. In at 1, out at 4. Now add a 3rd and a 4th. In at 1, out at "16".
Now graph number of catapults in series along the bottom vs. exit speed. Note that it is not linear. This is what he was saying.
You could argue that it's not relevant (though really, how relevant is this whole discussion?), but I think the relevancy would be that you would have to be careful how many catapults you let people deploy under that scenario. If you give people 4 catapults to deploy and they can get going 100kph on their own, now all of a sudden they can get going 1600kph by deploying the catapults in series.

Yes.
Writer 05-17-2004, 12:01 PM Nice level-headed review, Colossus. Thanks. :)
KillerONE 05-17-2004, 12:26 PM God I wish I could play this game now. I'm at the point where I'm tired of hearing about it and just want the damn thing.
Good write-up col.

Thrax Panda 05-17-2004, 12:36 PM Yeah, that was nerdy, but I want my programmers to understand mathYou are correct, the way col described it as currently working is indeed linear. However, the way he proposed it working is non-linear, and that's what Experimental was talking about. I'm [I]fairly[/b] certain that our physics programmer understands the difference between linear and non-linear ;)
