Colosus 05-16-2004, 11:25 PM Great review.
Overall from the review it sounds like the game is coming along quite nicely. I only hope the physics can come out properly and not turn out like the T2 physics patch.
The speed pack sounds like an excellent addition to the game, however the energy pack, in my opinion, should add more energy to be used just like in T1. One must remember that most of the old T1's are going to expect this game to emulate what they loved best about the game.
I like the idea of the chaingun, which will definitely cut down on whoring, but I don't like how Colosus and the others who played the game are saying the disk launcher feels like. From watching the preview movie I almost got the same feeling. The last thing we need is a malfunctioning disk launcher. I personally loved the T1 feel of the disk launcher perfect speed, perfect everything (but of course I learned how to use it and fell in love with the thing).
Thing is... Even if it IS slower, you'll get used to it. After a few hours, I was still hitting MA's and could pick someone off at a good distance. It is much better than the "random angle" technique from the original T2.

I don't think the Tribes 1 energy pack gave you more energy. It simply resupplied it faster.

No. It gave you more. (It took longer to deplete).
pathogen 05-16-2004, 11:30 PM Oh by the way, being a die hard capper what was skiing like? Where you able to disk jump at all? Was body blocking a factor?

huh weird. So tribes 2 get more or resupply faster?
Excal 05-16-2004, 11:32 PM Based on watching KP run circles around us I am going to say skiing is good once you get the hang of it. As for Bodyblocks I didnt see alot of those I am sure one of the other guys tried it though.

Disc jumps worked fine when angled properly. Skiing was difficult, but it just takes practice and the maps were a little small to really get a good route going (from limited play). Body blocking wasn't as big of a factor in what we played. Most of the people we played didn't even know what body blocking WAS, let alone how to use it effectively.
Sircle 05-16-2004, 11:35 PM not a glowing review
Colosus 05-16-2004, 11:39 PM not a glowing review
 It wasn't glowing, but it was in no way negative. Would you have rather I said "YAY T:V IS SUPER GREAT WOAW YIPPEE"? It has issues (most are being addressed), but I am very optimistic for the future. If you read the review in any other way, you are blind.

Isn't this normally called a preview? :)

re·view
v. re·viewed, re·view·ing, re·views
v. tr.
To look over, study, or examine again.
To consider retrospectively; look back on.
To examine with an eye to criticism or correction: reviewed the research findings.
To write or give a critical report on (a new work or performance, for example).
Law. To reexamine (an action or determination) judicially, especially in a higher court, in order to correct possible errors.
To subject to a formal inspection, especially a military inspection.
This is a REVIEW of the E3 Tribes: Vengeance build. What OTHER sites post are previews because they prefer to say non-comittal things like "You can fly!" and give no depth. You can't review something when you only play it for 5 minutes. Which is why I call this a REVIEW.

Colosus 05-16-2004, 11:56 PM let's just say that they have a lot to prove now
Was there ever a time they didn't have a lot to prove?
Let's see... Sequel comes out and blows for a majority of players. Development team is fired. Irrational is hired with little to no FPS experience. Second sequel is put into production and it is decided to make a whole new type of game.
It seems like their entire history has been trying to prove themselves. They shouldn't HAVE to. They owe you nothing and are making a great game from where I sit. If you don't like it, don't play it. Simple as that.

Nope, its a review. its a review of the game as HE played it. :p

General theme. Nothing against Sircle. Just a common post that I've been seeing and it bothered me. This was the first one directed at me and/or something I have said so I responded.
WarBuddha 05-17-2004, 12:16 AM Sweet, i really do hope this is as fun as it sounds. Now the one question i have, hows the replayablilty? Are we going to get bored with this in a few weeks?
P.S Col can someone fudging fix my tags? Being a Vet^4 with Member tags is depressing.

I think replayability will be fine. They'll have quite a few maps out at release and then the community will make more. Add that to competition and trying to learn all the new strats... In my opinion it should be fine.
BTW, tags are fixed.
WarBuddha 05-17-2004, 12:26 AM Sweet, now tell us about these new and mysterious strategies. :D
Thanks on the tags. :bigthumb:
experimental 05-17-2004, 12:27 AM its a linear relationship to the previous velocity, however the end result is an exponential increase in speed, eg. 2x previous would give you:
1 2 4 8 16 32 64 ...
ie. 2^n, where n is the number of times you hit the pad
its exponential, with base being the linear multiplier factor each time you hit the pad.
colosus was right ;)
sorry, i just reread this and i should make it clear that i'm not describing the current jump pad effect in game, which just adds a constant boost in the direction you are moving -- i'm discussing colosus' idea about it scaling your incoming velocity, and noting that if implemented it would have an exponential effect on speed.
cheers all ;)
