EX4R KUN 05-16-2004, 08:44 PM Nice write up BIG guy. Hearing you whom I know enjoys similar aspects of tribes as I do say it would rank a 7 out of 10 as it stands now, is encouraging to say the least. On the double-edge of the sword I also agreed with your opinions on what would make the game even better.
I hope they will be taken into consideration. I can't see how any of the fixes/tweaks/changes you mentioned could hinder the enjoyment of the "first-time" Tribes player in any way.
Physics first please. *would pay Zeta Jones to bat her eye-lashes at the dev team if he could afford her*
KineticPoet 05-16-2004, 08:58 PM You can't steal the enemy's deployables from their stations in the current build.
There is a deployable turret interference restriction but it's not currently as high as in previous Tribes games.
In the current build there are secondary messages that get displayed along with death messages. So you see messages like:
KineticPoet <spinfusor> Colosus
KineticPoet <capture stand> CAPTURED
Colosus <fuel depot> deposited 11
We can do something to the flag icons in the radar when the flag is dropped. There shouldn't be any need for an extra HUD element for this (although people should be able to make one if they want),

Updated to reflect new information. Thanks KP.
poisonspider 05-16-2004, 09:15 PM HOLY fudge 10 pages - give me like 1 hour to read it all
1st after update! and 24th in general!
Edit: I hate you poisonspider!
KineticPoet 05-16-2004, 09:22 PM Ah, and in the current build, everyone has an energy blade. It's a default backup weapon. You press ~ to equip it. It's not very powerful. Thanks Ryan for pointing that out,
KP
Colosus 05-16-2004, 09:28 PM w00t! My ideas are being implemented so fast. ;-)
windexy 05-16-2004, 09:35 PM Interesting........
regarding performance, did you notice any of the machines using anti-aliasing or ansiotropic filtering?
If so what settings etc^^ :(
Makasuro 05-16-2004, 09:39 PM Good review, I like how responsive the team is to fixing issues already and it's not even beta...
Definitely have my hopes WAY up for this game.
Thrax Panda 05-16-2004, 09:41 PM None of the PCs were using AA or AF.
Glare 05-16-2004, 09:50 PM all in all you couldve summed up why you lost very easily:
no good players
Fraggy Poo 05-16-2004, 09:55 PM Great review.
What it sounds like is that the gravity just needs to be increased a little bit. I thought this originally when the buggy was in the air a shazbotload. I mean, jumping is great, but that clown car will not be too usefull if the gravity (or its weight) is like what I saw in the video.
And I have a question about the grappler. Whenever I see it being used in the videos, people arent moving very fast. What if you were skiing at a pretty good clip and grappled onto something to change your direction, would it break? I think aiming the thing and hitting the target would require more skill at higher speeds, so to reward the players the line shouldnt break under stress. This would also open up the possibilities for grappling a vehicle and just skiing behind it.
And one more thing, on your catapults, did you guys get goose bumps when I made my thread describing basically the same thing before it was announced? :)
Smaqaho 05-16-2004, 09:57 PM Nice read, Nordramor's summary went much more indepth with the physics and specifics of gameplay but having the added experience of a semi-organized scrim gave you more to write about. Can't wait to playtest this and offer feedback on physics, weapons, gravity, etc. Flashbacks of "compmod" beta are coming back.
experimental 05-16-2004, 10:00 PM :-\ Fine. I don't like that term, but I'll change it. And you would have lost too Stu. So pffftth
its a linear relationship to the previous velocity, however the end result is an exponential increase in speed, eg. 2x previous would give you:
1 2 4 8 16 32 64 ...
ie. 2^n, where n is the number of times you hit the pad
its exponential, with base being the linear multiplier factor each time you hit the pad.
colosus was right ;)
poisonspider 05-16-2004, 10:02 PM there are still generators correct? do they power turrets?
are radars powered by an alternative source, such as a solar panal? Having them powered by the generator could make the generator to vital?
Thrax while you're here can I have some answers plz
TheRedDread 05-16-2004, 10:12 PM Good review. I am happy to hear about the plasma flaming ball thing. I love that stuff in TF2. I hope the character models scream and run around in circles when they are on fire - that would rock.
I hope the mortar has the same speed and impact as T1. I hope the depth perception isn't messed up for FOV 90 like it was in T2. I also hope that the physics get corrected so that people indeed fall with a decent strength of gravity.
Excal 05-16-2004, 10:13 PM all in all you couldve summed up why you lost very easily:

Yeah too bad we didn't have Glare there to lead us all to victory
cyanide 05-16-2004, 10:21 PM tribes3 sounds like tribes2
"gay"

I swear you and KP type this stuff just to confuse me.
"The matrices of the derivitive of the exponent is equivilent to the square root of pi rounded to the nearest variable blah blah blah..."
