What should I aim for from going from...
running 5 miles in 30 minutes
to smoking 2 packs a day for 2 years and not running
to starting to run again in about 2 weeks
I don't even remember what a good mile time is or how I started training way back then :x
slut you have hybrid err what's it called? not theory, hybrid...
anyway, you're a mutt - you have good genes :)
myself, when i was a large-ish lineman earlier in highschool the best i could manage was a 6:45
then again football isn't really about running miles fast, but i'm just saying. (6'2'', weight was ~210)
if u run the whole thing u get about 5:30... if u sprint the last 1/2 mile i bet u do really well. I was 5'10 about 160
i played volleyball for my high school which requires no cardio.
logmans 05-07-2004, 03:46 AM take it easy the 1st few days, by day 3 you should be able to do 10 minutes n/p. by the end of 3 months shoot for 7 minutes, unless they are in some kind of competition nobody has to run a mile in under 7 minutes. if you can do 7 minutes a mile for 3 miles you are in good enough shape for this world, in fact a lot of people hurt themselves trying to do more.
Sentor 05-07-2004, 03:48 AM Xapz, In 3 months I went from 11 minutes to about 6:45. I have a small build and strong legs naturally, so you might just want to take it a day at a time, and work your way down day by day. Try and set an easy goal of like 9 minutes, then try to beat it the next day.
Gnome 05-07-2004, 03:51 AM Most people don't run a mile in less than 6 minutes unless they run often or are in quite good shape. I am in good shape and run 6 minute miles. 6'0 155.
I ran 5 miles every morning the last few summers (and need to hurry up and start again). I just ran around a nearby track and because I run with some slower females, we do: run a mile/walk a lap, run a mile/walk a lap, etc. 4 laps being a mile. So we really get 5 miles ran and 1 walked. Keeping your heart pumping is the main thing.
However, as others have said getting around 7 minutes is what you should ultamately aim for. However your probably not gonna get that kinda time if its your first time running in a while.(or ever) Multiple miles at 6 minutes or even one mile in under 6 minutes, is not something you should exspect unless you are going to take runing seriosly.

Well, you didn't really say so...
Try starting with quitting smoking.
P.S. I wouldn't recommend running on a track, I would go for an outside night time or early morning jog...

Yeah.. I quit about 4 days ago.. I'm feeling a lot more energetic now 'n stuff, and I want to start running again, but I still feel a lot of the shit inside my lungs.
NuckinFuts 05-07-2004, 04:24 AM If you're fat and out of shape at least do it under 9-10min... On average for regular people good times are 5-6min... Sub 5 if you're into distance running.
iNVAR 05-07-2004, 04:29 AM running 1 mile is nothing. run 1.5 miles. that extra 0.5 miles really gets to you. i know. we do at least 2-3 miles in police academy every day.
a good time to shoot for ONLY a mile is about 6-7 minutes after 3 months of running.
a good time to shoot for 1.5 miles after 3 months of running is about 10-11 minutes.

try this
iNVAR 05-07-2004, 04:34 AM oh, and a big part of running is a mental thing. a lot of people don't run the mile or 1.5 mile quickly because they just sort of give up. if you're able to NOT focus on the running and zone out or something, it goes by much quicker. your breathing is important, but focusing on that too makes the run seem a lot longer.
the trick is to zone out completely, but be so familiar with running that the rhyhtm for your breathing is completely subconscious.
Pengo 05-07-2004, 04:35 AM uhh yeah...7th/8th grade track average time was around 8-9 minutes for a mile as (for the kids that had all their appendages.) I think I ran it around 8 minutes my first time, and for some reason I have a lot of trouble running long distances; though I'm fairly coordinated/athletic. My breathing is messed up...
adult i'd definitely shoot for 6 minutes or less to be in good shape

are you blind, dumb, or both?
regular people do not run 5-6 minute miles. the average of a normal person would DEFINITELY NOT DO IT UNDER 6:30.
to get every average joe running 5-6 minute miles in 3 months would require actual training than regular excercise.
JohnnyX 05-07-2004, 05:13 AM I used to be able to run a mile in about 6
so for you
about 50 minutes
fatass
Bounty 05-07-2004, 07:44 AM I run a mile almost every morning, and it takes me about 7 to 8 minutes at a medium pace.
piotrr 05-07-2004, 07:57 AM You should be able to do it in under an hour, otherwise there is something seriously wrong with you.
-ennui- 05-07-2004, 08:02 AM If you stepped on the treadmill right now and ran a mile I'd guess it'd be in the 10-11 minute range. In 3 months, shoot for under 9.
El Mariachi 05-07-2004, 08:15 AM on the topic of running: for the last 1.5 months i have been running around 5 times a week for about 40 mins. i recently slowed my pace by about 20%. my jogs have become much more enjoyable (i never feel out of breath), and prolonged due to a slower pace. after reading some info on aerobic vs. anaerobic exercise, it is better (if burning fat is your goal) to keep the slower/longer pace, than the faster/shorter pace.
yea i run for a half hour and get like 3 miles.
Falhawk 05-07-2004, 08:23 AM a kid I ran against in high school got 4:16
fastest I ever got was 5:15. when I ran cross country (3 mile race) I think my splits were at like 5:30 or so
but then again I was more of a shorter distance person (did the 400 in 50 flat).
