Bodom 04-27-2004, 03:11 PM was wondering about arena and how the packs would affect it.
first off, is arena planned on being included with the game. if its is, on to more questions...if not, nothing i type below matters.
Do you think that shieldpacks will negatively affect gameplay? Here's what I have figured
A. Shield pack is ALWAYS giving you 1/4 dmg protection.
B. When its "in use" it gives 3/4 damage protection.
C. It DOES NOT drain your jetpacks energy
D. You can snipe. You can snipe! You can snipe????
That means that where a person used to have to trade off not jetting and taking a blow (no dmg) they have the option to turn it on (take 25%) as well as fly away for further mobility and less dmg taken unless its a direct shot.
and you can snipe...which essentially, i find rediculous, and coupled with these 2 things i hope to god that: shield is removed from arena, rifles are forbidden to shielders in arena, or some other unforeseen balance is in the works.
shield-whores/campers are bad enough in t1/t2 but you still see epackers to duel and snipe. i cant see how anyone would be anything but a shielder in arena and thats sad
Darkfire 04-27-2004, 04:06 PM 1. arena hasnt been announced i dont think.
2. certain packs may not be in arena.
3. certain weapons may not be in arena.
4. you spawn in medium so my 2c's would be you also spawn in medium in arena if its in t:v, so no sniper rifle.
Bodom 04-27-2004, 04:33 PM hot rockin thx
axle-of-t1 04-27-2004, 04:46 PM there is a sport that is unnamed which sounds a lot like arena. I found myself wondering about the shield / rifle. The shield, although blocking a lot of damage will not be able to be turned off, from what ive read until its depleted. When it is, you have to wait a recharge time to reuse.
So, still a bit unfair, but it evens out quite much to say if you had t1 shield and rifle, that would be badly unbalanced.
Sir Lucius 04-27-2004, 04:58 PM I think you need to match up the packs you'll face in an arena setting.
Shield obviously gives you the best protection...
But repair is always healing you!
Doesn't arena work in rounds? So with the powerful repair pack it's kind of like having infinate repair kits (as they replenish).
With that in mind, what do you think would be better in an arena situation?
Your other two packs might not be as useful. The speed pack, however would work well for someone held up in a base (which you might see more in arena T:V). Plus the high RoF should help in duels as well.
The epack would be the least useful perhapes.
So to sum it up:
Shield: Best Defense -- can take the most hits in a heavy assult
Repair: Best Endurance -- can survive the round longest if you can survive every encounter
Speed: Best Attack -- self explanitory
Energy: Best evasion -- easiest to dodge attacks if you have more energy I'm sure.
It's quickly to assume shield will be overpowered, and usually in these situations the most powerful is found and always used (epack in T1/T2 ctf, sheild in arena), but I really think the devs went out to change that this time, and it could translate to arena.
Phaseshift 04-27-2004, 06:28 PM I think you guys are totally wrong about the shield pack giving too much protection. It will allow some damage though. In the end it depends on how they balance the numbers and percentages.
I'm hoping that no one pack dominates arena. It seems to me that the repair pack is the weakest because doesn't give you a way to avoid damage like the others do.
No word on if arena is in or not, but they said they will have some combat oriented game type included. So even if arean isn't included this is still a good discussion.
What will really be interesting is if it becomes a four way game of rock, paper scissors. What I mean for example is maybe epack beats shield pack, rpack beats speed pack ect.
So if you know you are going against someone with pack A you would use pack B to increase your changes of winning.
pyrot3chnic 04-27-2004, 06:31 PM It seems to me that the repair pack is the weakest because doesn't give you a way to avoid damage like the others do.
which means you'll always have pussies who run from fights to let their pack repair them.
Phaseshift 04-27-2004, 06:32 PM which means you'll always have pussies who run from fights to let their pack repair them.
We have that now, sorta.
Apotheosis 04-27-2004, 08:08 PM which means you'll always have pussies who run from fights to let their pack repair them.
I actually think that's a good element to have in Arena :P
axle-of-t1 04-28-2004, 03:30 PM but, the shield is powerful, but i dont think its over powerful becuase of the fact of once its on, its on till it depletes, you cant stop/ recharge, you have to use it all then wait recharge time, which can pose a problem when fighting..
Defaced 04-28-2004, 03:45 PM I can see the shield pack becoming the dominant pack. Since you are no longer forced to be stationary, a good shielder will become nearly impossible to kill. He is no longer sitting there absorbing damage, but both abosorbing and actively avoiding the damage at no detriment to either his evasion or absorbtion ability.
There would be no real reason to take another pack that I can see. To do significant damage to a shielder will require a near direct hit, but since he can now just move, those won't be scored very often.
Really, what I see happening is people will just start running out of ammo all the time before they can kill anyone.
