You didn't have to aim the ELF gun. You have to aim and hit with the grappling hook, and it (probably) doesn't do anything but cut out some of your speed, rather than remove all your jet energy.
The ELF was far worse than this.

New info, well: you can grapple on people and terrain... there's some kind of a buckler thing (a bit of explanation here?). Also there's talk of boomerang discs (a lot of explanation please).
