2 pcs. both xp.
one (desktop) is connected directly to dsl modem/hub (yes, it is both a modem, and a hub [speedstream 5861]).
the other (laptop) is connected wirelessly from a dlink (DI-524 802.11g) which is connected to the dsl modem/hub
for the life of me i can't get the two to communicate. i tried the xp networking utils with no luck. they are both online, but i just want to file share, and printer share and i don't know enough myself to know what to look @ next/troubleshoot. any input, whether some links, or some good info would be greatly appreciated. thank you.
no idea.... Should have kept broadband modem seperate from switch/hub/router its much easier.

i wish i would have been the one to make the decision; it's my g/fs dsl setup, and it was the modem she had long before we met. the modem/router/hub thing also made it a headache getting wireless up and running.

turn off your firewall.
as far as i can tell, all possible firewalls (software/hardware) have been disabled.

i have almost the same setup and i had the same problem because norton firewall blocks the ports that are used for file sharing. Invar could help you much more than i could about the ports.. but im sure that has something to do with it. you might also want to check and see if windows firewall is enabled.

what are the IP addresses for each of the computers? can you ping each other?

i have gone through and verified that all possible (that i know of) firewalls were disabled:
(2) winxp firewalls
(1) dlink firewall
(1) speedstream firewall
i just tried to setup a remote desktop from the laptop to my desktop with no luck as well. after going through the windows tutorial i still had issues (when the laptop tried to connect, i got an error saying remote desktop hadn't been enabled on the other machine even after going through the enable process). i figured it was still the same issue that kept me from doing remote desktop that kept me from networking all together.
what would be the next step after confirming pings? (thank you for the help so far btw)
*edit* i was only able to ping from the laptop to the desktop. i get a timeout when trying to ping the laptop.

ok, got remote desktop working from laptop to desktop. not sure if this solves anything.
