Currently my computer i build 3 months ago is now running slower than anything, slower than my other 1.2GHZ computer. It lags as I try to multitask such as listening to music and doin msn at the same time. Does any expert know why? i tried to remove all temp files, registry files, almost every trash there is. Also i did a virus scan earlier this week and i tried to format my computer 2 days ago.

here are my com specs

ASUS P4S8X-X
GeForece 4 MX 440
512 RAM (PC266)
40GB Harddrive
INTEL 2.0 GHZ Processor

Any expert know y?

maybe u got to many aplications running in the backround... try removing some programs you dont need from the startup.. i think its msconfig and something else. try deleting all the junk programs in your computer such as the gain.. gator.. and all that spyware stuff. oh yea and dont forget to scan for spyware. my computer was just like yours.. a 3.0 and it was running slow till i did all this and i found out that i had a ton of applications runing in the backround and a ton of un-useful programs on my comp. when removed all the things i dint need at startup... all the junk programs.. and all the spyware my computer was faster.

Umm.. i don't think that 's the problem. cause i did use a program "adware 6.0" to scan and delete those useless files. also i did try to remove gator. I even tried to format my harddisk. SIGHZ. like WHAT is WRONG.. hahaha.. i hate this computer. it's frustrating seeing my 2.0GHZ running slower than my old computer 1.2GHZ.

here is your solution: right click on your 'my computer' icon. click manage. go to the disk defragmenter thing. analyze your C drive to see if you need a defragmentation of your drive. when you are done doing this (defragmenting) go to www.safer-networking.org and get rid of your spyware using search & Destroy. that is most likely your problem

u didn't try everything or it would be fixed please read this thread. You probably have a virus or a trojan.

ok u did the defrag.. well did u disk cleanup before u defrag..? disk clean up may sound lame but it works alot.. like all that junk u delete.. some files can still be left in your hd so what u wanna do is get rid of them then defrag to put the files closer to each other.. so it dont take so long to read your HD.

Go to device manager and expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers then go to the properties of your Primary IDE Channel and click on Adv. Settings. Check to see if the HD is running in ULTRA DMA 5 mode. You want it to be running in that but my guess is that it is running in PIO mode.

my guess is he had gator amongst other spyware //virus';

i hope you have norton/panda installed

adaware AND spybot installed (and spybot protection)

and WinXP updates.

99.999% of virus' will be gone on a reformat.

What he said.

my sister comp was really slow
so checked ATA/ATAPI , her HD was on PIO mode
i did remove the primary ide channel & restart , it's back to Ultra DMA
and works like a charm

Did you say you "tried" to remove gator, so you have it? Make sure you have the newest reference files for ad-aware. And spybot. In windows 98 you can go into start/run/ type in msconfig / startup and I think all you need is LoadPowerProfile, Scan Registry, SysTry, and TaskMonitor. Don't know how it is for any other versions of windows.
