Wulfen 03-26-2004, 12:20 AM Shameful plea to allow threads that actually deal with the game content to live without locks. Especially flame-free threads with honest requests/queries, like anything posted on here that DOESN'T have anything to do with the TL. : \
Hell, I think I've seen Derm threads last longer.
I think we're reading 2 different forums cause I have no idea what you're talking about.
Wulfen 03-26-2004, 12:49 AM C'mon now. The fact that you guys are treating threads about actual Tribes items with the same courtesy as threads about Tribal sweepers?
I'm not sure where I stand on the whole TL deal, but let the people discuss it at least.

I'm not sure where I stand on the whole TL deal, but let the people discuss it at least. It's been discussed. An endless stream of "you're wrecking my precious game, you suck" holds little interest for me (for some odd reason). . There isn't anything else to say really.

I hear ya on that. These guys are just frustrated cause they want more scoop on the game and are itchin to get their hands on it as well to try it out. I however am having faith that you are making a "NEW" game. And because its a new game that due to the play style and direction of this NEW game that some things (like the TL) are better left out in favor of other items.
You know us...we just want scoop...LOL.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Ben's thread was very well mannered, with a lot of good points to keep the TL in. You (or anyone else from the dev team) however, despite our direct request, did not serve any information about why the TL is not included in T:V, and locked the whole thread, thus making the impression of abusing your rights on these forums. If you have good points, post them, otherwise we will just think you're being ignorant towards the community you're making a game for.

Ignorant? I think you mean arrogant.
Amadeus 03-26-2004, 02:25 PM Ignorant? I think you mean arrogant.
That too, but ignorant describes the above situation better. He's supposed to be making this game for us. If we make such a strong request and back it up with good points, it seems to me a good idea to listen to it instead of just stubbornly saying "No!" and locking every thread mentioning the issue. Or if there is a good reason why the TL is not there, share it with us, and convince us that the TL is not needed.

Ok.

Actually, he's making the game for Vivendi while trying to placate as many people as possible. There are not enough people that care about Targetting Laser to make it a viable use of resources and time (at this point). Who knows, it could be placed in the game by the time it ships because they found they have more time. There are just a lot more things with a higher priority right now.
And he has no obligation to explain ANY of his decisions or the decisions of Irrational to you. What he chooses to give you is a gift and not part of his job. So when he says "No", you can ask why, but he has no requirement to answer you and by flooding the forums with countless posts and derogatory comments, it does not help change anyone's mind.
Candide 03-26-2004, 02:38 PM I don't think he (or anyone else on the development team) "owe" us anything. Sure we are big fans and help make up a community but they can choose to give us ZERO information if they choose. I would have liked more info on why no TL was going to be included but its likely that that would have given away some information they dont want to share right now (to build suspense/excitement, keep info from competitors, etc), Obviously these guys know how the TL was used (spotting tasks for people, identifying yourself to a vehicle for a pickup, ranging targets, pink floyd light shows..LOL, etc). They must have accounted for the need or non-need for this somehow in T:V. I just eagerly await the facts :)
Until then...they can give as little or as much intel as they want :p

I don't know, but a 12 page petition that would have gotten a whole damn larger if it's not locked would tell me that a lot of people do care about the TL.
I am also not a pro at programming, although I do have some experience with it, and I really don't think that adding this tool would have taken up any significant resources... you can make a community contest to model and skin it if you don't want to, and all you have to do is to do the programming...
Anyway, of course he has no obligation on giving out any information. For some strange reason though, he does. He gives away information on weapons, vehicles, gameplay features, system requirements and a number of other things, most of which are almost certain to change, or not even specific enough to be the foundation of any speculation or judgement. Furthermore, he sometimes does that even when we don't ask.
The reason behind this strange, mind-bogglingly fascinating behavior is the fact that people care. We are eager to know any little bit of info about the game we are about to get. Sure, he can stuck his head in the sand, but don't be surprised if we don't welcome that decision like we would some *gasp* reasoning.

That is part of it. That is not, however, the whole motivation.

I will admit that the original thread on the subject was started as much more of a tirade than a serious consideration of the subject. However, I believe my personal concerns strike a very moderate path between outright crying "T:V's gonna suck!" and "T:V's gonna rule!" Many people who have hopped on the wonderful bandwagon I created are overreacting to the peril of omitting the TL, just as many people who oppose my bandwagon are overly apologetic for decisions of the dev team which people like me disagree with.
I do not have all the information about the game. However, based on the information I have digested, I will cast my judgment where I feel it is appropriate, although I will attempt to be fair in all judgments I cast.
I do not believe the omission of the TL would completely ruin T:V and make the game utterly unpalatable; that would be an ignorant assumption. At the same time, I do not believe that the TL is an obsolete dinosaur, destined to be cast aside for the dev team's glorious vision, in which there can be no fault.
I apologize for the forum spam my movement has inflicted, but little else.
