9800 pro fine till install ATI drivers then = 3bit colors :(

Just got a 9800 pro had a g-force 3. With windows default vga video drivers the cards runs 1280x1024 at 32bit. Install the new ATI drivers get an error about ATI control panel can't find ATI card or something and the card displays in 3bit colors and can't change the display options :( Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks for the help

are the old NVidia drivers removed? There's tools (use google) to wipe the old drivers completely. Then, use the ATI remove option from add/remove programs to remove the ATI drivers, reboot, and reinstall them. Make sure to use the full ATI "high speed" (http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/winxp/radeonwdm-xp.html?type=xp&prodType=graphic&prod=productsXPdriver&submit.x=17&submit.y=6) package, as it's hard to screw it up.
