New laptop sound driver blue screen

So i just got my new laptop yesterday. I've got most things put the way i want it until suddenly i get a blue screen. After monkeying about with it for a bit i figured it's a sound driver problem because i get it almost every time i use ventrilo.
I check microsoft update and lo and behold, there's a driver update. Now here comes the weird part. Everytime i download and try to install this new driver, i get the bluescreen and the installation fails... so i dunno whether or not that would have fixed it anyway.

So here's my dilemma, i could now just reformat and start again (which i probably should have done as soon as i got the computer) or someone helps me figure out how to fix this. I'm not terribly familiar with laptops.

Relevant specs:
C-Media AC97 audio device
VIA chipset
Full spec: http://www.evesham.com/PCs/Info.asp?e=0F468FDA-2160-43C0-B57B-F37BE7C36D8C

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps. :D

Try getting a sound driver direct from your laptop's website. Lots of times laptop's have their own slightly modified drivers.
