Imposter 03-25-2004, 12:40 PM The boys at HomeLAN got to see Tribes: Vengeance at the GDC and posted their impressions.
Since the game uses the Unreal engine, Tribes: Vengeance is already looking very good at this stage with the massive enviroments, the detailed level textures and especially the physics engine which looks like it will be used to great effect in the game. There were lots of objects to move around in the level and one wonders how Irrational will take advantage of this.

VaporTrail 03-25-2004, 12:47 PM Perhaps "English A" or "Bonehead English" (addicted readers of Heinlein might get the reference).
Fitty 03-25-2004, 12:49 PM massive indoor structures :hrm:
:hrm:
welcome to february?
Colosus 03-25-2004, 12:50 PM From the sounds of it, he was playing a single player mission, so don't get your panties in a bunch.
KillerONE 03-25-2004, 01:17 PM welcome to february?
I know the massive stuff is primarily in the SP. Most MP stuff will more than likely be on our ever comfortable rolling hills of Tribes ski glory.
Theta 03-25-2004, 03:01 PM This has to be the first article with absolutely 0 information in it.
The level we got to see takes place inside one of those massive indoor structures that was used so well in the original two games in the Tribes series.
I hope he was trying to be sarcastic.

Hope it was SP.

Zoolooman 03-25-2004, 03:59 PM That was "impressions?" That article was so vague and nondescript, I feel reticent to call it a dimple lest I overvalue it. Excuse my reluctance at applying the term impression; I feel that journal entry is worlds away (or several blows with a hammer) from leaving an impression in anything.
Elaborate, please?
KillerONE 03-25-2004, 04:50 PM What's going on Zooloo.. I'm getting a real sense of OVERapplication from our friend Webster. Simmer it down a bit! :)
Zoolooman 03-25-2004, 06:28 PM I didn't touch a dictionary. I'll give a material example of why the construction of the above paragraph is quite within my day to day capabilities.
Example of a sentence I just created from my basic word-hoard:
I find your brazen insinuation exceedingly offensive. I didn't reference any dictionary when crafting the above barb.
Example of this sentence after picking up my dictionary to assure myself I didn't incorrectly use any words:
I manumit from the shackles of my calm deportment a keen for your lost courtesy. How you presume the false architecture of my syntax is most vexing. You besmear my repute with implications of outside reference. I attest, no word-book was employed in the careful composition of my clear criticism. Take back your imputations foul troglodyte! I won't suffer your libel in this or any age!
Guess how many words I had to look up to make this paragraph? Two: manumit and impute. Just because I decide to abuse my knowledge of the English language when flaming Jcat's article doesn't mean I had to use Websters. Oh yeah, and before you note it, yes, architecture was used loosely in the dictionary-assisted quotation.
Edit: Don't be offended. I'm not angry at you. :P But I'm not a poser diction-nazi. I really know a lot of words.
KillerONE 03-25-2004, 09:40 PM Ya, and I wasn't asserting that you USED a dictionary.. I only meant that for around here, when you post, compared to others it makes the thread look like a nice white t-shirt with a big ketchup stain on it.
T-shirt being the collection of people who post typically worded highschool to college level English.
Ketchup stain being anything you post.
Not to say your posts are as unsightful as a ketchup stain, just that they sometimes seem so out of place on an Internet forum. :) (not that there's anything wrong with that)
This explanation got long. :)
PapaSnuff 03-27-2004, 06:36 PM Just figured I'd post a little of what I thought when I played at GDC.
The levels look like they are the perfect size for 10v10 matches and 16v16 pubs. There are a variety of landscapes, grassy, desert, etc, just like T1 and T2. They look amazing. I haven't kept up enough with T:V to know if this is a feature or a bug, and I forgot to ask Thrax, but when you ski through the water there is zero slowdown, which I think rocks, I hope that stays.
The out of bound walls are invisible, and elastic. If you walk up to one kind of slowly and back into it a whole bunch, you can then run forward and jet to slingshot yourself forward at high speed. Very cool.
The burner turret looks like it will be really fun to man, but you leave yourself a little open to attack since you are physically sitting with the turret. You can shoot balls of flame and light people on fire. There seemed to be a bug where if the fire didn't kill you, you stayed on fire, but didn't take any damage (and skiing through the water didn't put out the flames :) ).
Skiing is awesome! I kept overshooting all my runs a little bit, but it was quick to get used to the new jetting. The other thing to get used to is the limited amount of air control you now have without even jetting. Simply strafing left will move you left in the air, without the need to jet left. It's very minimal, but you want to use this for fine adjustments so you don't waste your jets on something you could get for free. There are audio hints to tell you how well you just hit the last ski. If you hear a crunch, you didn't hit it well enough to get max speed from it, if you hear a swoosh, you know you hit the sweet spot of the ski. Thrax says KP is 95% swoosh...
The disc launcher felt perfect. The blaster was completely removed and replaced by a nice flak gun. The energy blade has a somewhat deceptive range to it. It doesn't look like the blade shoots out that far, but to hit someone you need to be about 5 feet away. Rather odd.
The physics are going to be awesome. I didn't get to see it in action because I was playing single player on CTF maps and the single player mission maps. All of the players have momentum and mass now, so if a light tries to body block a skiing heavy, they will both deflect, and some of the momentum will transfer to the light. The angle will be determined by the reflection vector off of their bounding volumes (2 spheres, think snowman-esque). Splat and I wanted to try doing this on purpose to give a light capper tons of speed, but Thrax said there are "other, easier ways to get insane speed."
The bounce pads are very fun and don't seem out of place.
Mine discing seems like an impossibility.
The flag doesn't respond to disc shots (i.e. it behaves like T1 flag).
