constant crashes, maybe t1 related :[

My computer is crashing constantly and I cant figure out what the problem is. It mostly happens in tribes 1, but it's also happened when im just sitting on desktop listening to winamp and browsing once or twice.

Pretty much the longest its gone while tribes was in game is about a minute (timed it at 57 seconds earlier ohoho) but the last couple times ive tried it doesnt even go more than 3 or so. I tried playing cs just to see if maybe it was intensive graphics use or something but I played for about a half hour and then i remembered cs isnt that fun and closed it on my own will.

I've tried reinstalling drivers (det/forcewares.. 4072 4403 4523, and now im on 5655), i reinstalled xp pro and used whatever directx is default with xp pro corp, and then installed dx9. i switched my tribes config/skins around a bunch of ways and now i have no skins on. then i tried a fresh tribes install from the original cd.

i think thats everything i tried so far. basically when it crashes it either straight up restarts out of nowhere, or the screen freezes on the last frame and the sound goes to shit. my temps are fine, 42 processor and i think around 32 chassis.

i hope thats all the necessary information. i dont think i forgot anything. except specs..

soyo dragon+ mobo
amd xp 1600+
512mb, i think pc2700. maybe 2100.
geforce3 ti200
using onboard network and sound

i think thats it.
any ideas?

Yuck, really hard to diagnose that kinda stuff. First thing I'd try is to put an alternate PSU in there, it is the most likely culprit. Pretty odd that CS doesn't reboot the computer like Tribes does though. No idea why that happens. Before that, try turning the sound off while playing (long shot).

i tried turning off game sounds and i set it to aureal 3d sound or whatever instead of directsound, in case it's a dx problem or something. still crashed. then i tried turning off onboard sound completely in bios, and it still crashed. my guess is either psu or graphics. im skeptical about psu though because i just played cs for a couple of hours (new deathmatch cs is funsauce) and it ran fine.

which motherboard specifically is that? is it based on a VIA chipset?

Yeah, it's VIA.

I installed the patch and went into 5150e on snowblind, no one in the server. It crashed as soon as snowblind loaded. It froze on the last frame and then sound went to shit. All static and whatnot.

it never freezes when you're just in windows and not playing games?

open up your computer case and direct a fan inside. i know you said you already eliminated heat as the possibility, but it doesn't hurt to make absolutely sure.

Yeah it has frozen once while at desktop, I think. Hasn't since though. And I dont have a fan with me right now, but the room I'm in is pretty cold and the AC is pretty close to my box, and I have the side off of it. I wish the gf3 had a heat sensor on it.

so i turned all the graphics detail sliders all the way down, and play in 800x600 and sometimes it can play for a pretty long time before dying. but now when it dies half the time its reboots, half the time its error report messages. here's the appcompat.txt that came with it.

yeah i just realized during a scrim that when tribes freezes on the last frame instead of rebooting its just tribes thats messed up. my keyboard would usualy lock up, but i was just on ts and could hear my team talking while it was frozen. so i hit the win-key and it took me back to explorer and i restart tribes.
