NeoLotus 02-19-2004, 08:21 AM Sup all?
Im new here, and a big fan of the tribes franchise...
I would like to know how you people see the tribes games? And what you hope T:V will be like.
Personally im hoping T:V will feel more like a FPS sportsgame then anything else. I have read about the singleplayer campaign, which sound pretty cool indeed, but i would still love to see the MP part of the game as a standalone application.
I would like to see stats collecting for the players. MVPs and game awards would also be great. And the abillity to configure and play tournaments and seasons in the game would be awsome.
Both for botfights and lan/internet games. Imagine a singleplayer "owner" gamestyle where you coach, train, trade and pay your team during a season (or seasons). Much like EA sports series of sportgames.

Darkfire 02-19-2004, 09:14 AM This game isnt being made by EA, thank god.
Theta 02-19-2004, 09:35 AM umm wow, don't expect a single player franchise mode in T:V ;)
Fraggy Poo 02-19-2004, 09:50 AM Can I recruit Natural and others for my franchise? I want salary caps as well.
NeoLotus 02-19-2004, 10:11 AM well i dont expect anything from it...
but i know that ut2003 was supposed to be shipped with a singleplayer where you could trade/release/hire players for your team....and you played a kind of season with playoffs and all...
But it all ended up like any other boring botgame singleplayer
BFGanksta 02-19-2004, 10:13 AM Well since thrax probably won't okay this for T:V, how about a TW member draft?
Stilgar 02-19-2004, 10:37 AM I was very surprised to find that the majority of people I have met that play these games envision them as a metaphor for sports.
I had always seen myself playing "army."
But a surprising number of people see it more akin to soccer or some such ballgame.
Theta 02-19-2004, 02:13 PM It's more of a sport in that you're playing capture the flag with a bunch of your buddies. You're not fighting an epic war game meant to annihilate the other team. Why would a bunch of people have a war over a couple of flags? :p
Killjoy 02-19-2004, 02:22 PM I always think of it as a sport, but that may be just because I am a competative player, depends on the gametype really. Seige, DnD, CnH feel more warlike.

because..it..it's THE FLAG! duh you stupid n00b! ;)
I think the whole sports thing actually dind't really come around until matches started being Shout Casted. Now you had a game that was evolving into a LOT more than what it was originally designed to be, with ladders. Now the evolving part was new, the ladders was the same, but what changed with shoutcasting was now not only did you have people just playing the ladder, but people were "tuning in" to listen to the game. They were hearing and enjoying the play-by-play. People were finding out the outcomes of matches before OGL/TWL could update with the results.
And I think thats what really did it. Tribes TV helped move it a long.
Hell, I still remember the first time I was in a pub, and someone came in and immediately announced the results of some match. It was like joining a chatroom and seeing people go "OMG! <team A> beat <team B> we have a shot at the playoffs!" or something.
back to my point, once matches were being shout-casted, the idea that it was more a "sport" than just a war-game was in peoples heads and it just kinda grew. UT also helped when it's premise was that you were playing the "Gladiator Sports" of the future or whatever they called them.
LoVer 02-19-2004, 04:23 PM Lotus, I don't think you'll find much support for the EA style game you might be talking about on these forums. Most players here probably view tribes titles as being sports games, especially with the shoutcasting and tribes television that have been created.
I think you'll find though that most people here want to leave competition, awards, and other management features to community based sites like tribalwar and teamwarfare rather than see them built into the game. In game ladder functions are usually oversimplified and rarely help to build the community. Tribalwar and Teamwarfare on the other hand are complex and foster the community, even if it is only through letting us all HaTe on one another pre-match. :)
NeoLotus 02-19-2004, 05:01 PM points taken...
i may have overloaded a little when speaking of seasons and such (though i still think it would be a cool singleplayer game) but in an interview ive read somewhere several months ago, there was some talk about the singleplayer campaign and they mentioned that at some point in the game the plot will evolve around a sport of some kind and youll be playing in one of the teams...

Same here. I'm hoping T:V will have a WAR gametype, to compliment the Flag and Ball gametypes. I hate sports. :)
Mr Rabies 02-19-2004, 05:46 PM well, Julia's a bit of a sports star, so i wouldn't put playing a few matches of "Ball" in single player past the devs
pyrot3chnic 02-19-2004, 06:07 PM Well the popular gametypes in other games have a more 'realistic' objective. If you look at counter-strike, the terrorists try to blow things up, while the counter-terrorists try to prevent it... k that makes sense. Same with call of duty and soldier of fortune 2. So when you come over to tribes, you have two cultures fighting massive battles over 2 flags... k wtf? Even if it doesn't make much sense, it's fun. Just like kicking or throwing a ball can be.
If you were to take Siege for instance, that would make sense. A war, one side is attacking while the other is defending. It's a lot easier to compare tribes CTF to a sport than anything else..
I think the thread zoolooman made a couple of days ago was a good idea. A capture-and-hold and defend-and-destroy hybrid, much like onslaught in 2k4. I'm sure it would be created anyway, but it has a better chance of success if it's out of the box.
Killjoy 02-19-2004, 06:27 PM you are right. Something like Onslaught would rock for Tribes pubbing and such. say 5-7 mini bases over a large landscape...
Go Thrax! no Qix to stop you this time!
