FireStarter 01-31-2004, 02:11 PM Specifically concerning the "iffy" part of the game...
After over five years, can Tribes' gameplay still compete with the Counter-Strikes and Battlefield of the world?
Who comes up with this shit?

Sir Lucius 01-31-2004, 02:23 PM That's a good question. Can T:V get a competetive number of gamers to play online at release?
FireStarter 01-31-2004, 02:34 PM I would have to disagree with you Sir Lucius. Look how many "run and gun" shooters are out there? Literally hundreds if not thousands, many based on the same game play as CS or even as far back as Wolfenstien and no one is having problems selling those classic and overly done game types.
Now think of how many games offer a jet pack and skiing besides T1 and T2? Yeh, sure, T1 and T2 have been out for awhile, but what is the percentage of FPS gamers who have actually really taken the time to sit down and try to get better at it? The number has to be extremely small...
Sir Lucius 01-31-2004, 02:40 PM oh, you're talking about the word 'still' I take it?
I read it as, "even tho the Tribes series is 5 years old, will it be able to compete?"
I think you're reading it as, "Can this new tribes game maintain like the series has in the past?"
Mooley 01-31-2004, 02:40 PM Hype and the unreal engine should our title lots.
'PrinceofSpades 01-31-2004, 02:41 PM Woot a nice mention of ss2845
Mooley 01-31-2004, 02:48 PM yea Vengeance is getting first page headline on both gamespy and gamespot so that's good.
FireStarter 01-31-2004, 02:49 PM oh, you're talking about the word 'still' I take it?
Yep, to me, Gamespy is saying that the "whole jet pack thingy" is ofn and has been done enough in the past that it won't draw out a new crowd. [which is why I didn't agree with their statement]
I think you're reading it as, "Can this new tribes game maintain like the series has in the past?"
Well I think T1 more then met it's expectations drawing out a large fan base, but T2 would have had much greater success if not for the buggy release.
Zoolooman 01-31-2004, 02:52 PM It wasn't a derogatory article or anything.

Still not a great article, though.
Rigel 01-31-2004, 03:10 PM Tribes: Vengeance will feature classic Tribes weapons like the Spinfuser (a pseudo-rocket launcher that fires explosive discs at enemies),
Last I knew, it was Spinfusor. Did they change it or am I just an idiot(granted I acknowledge that its probably a little of both)?
SubhumaN 01-31-2004, 03:37 PM I really dislike "Sluggo" so that comment didnt supprise me at all
Dark|Dragon 01-31-2004, 03:46 PM I liked the IGN article a lot more.
Infinite X 01-31-2004, 04:07 PM realease date 9/14/2004
is that right?
KillerONE 01-31-2004, 04:10 PM Last I knew, it was Spinfusor. Did they change it or am I just an idiot(granted I acknowledge that its probably a little of both)?
Well, KP (or Ed?) described the Spinfusor similar to a Quake rocket launcher at the press event.
And it does somewhat work that way, it shoots a fast moving projectile that has splash damage (explodes on contact), just like a Quake rocket. :)
StormMage 01-31-2004, 04:13 PM Last I knew, it was Spinfusor. Did they change it or am I just an idiot(granted I acknowledge that its probably a little of both)?
Well at the press conference the spinfusor was described as a weapon very similar to quakes rocket launcher so go figure.
pyrot3chnic 01-31-2004, 04:17 PM After wrapping up our 2004's Most Wanted feature a few weeks ago, a number of readers wrote in, asking, "where's Tribes: Vengeance"? You could hardly blame them: with cutting-edge graphics powered by the Unreal engine and a (gasp!) true single-player campaign, the latest game in the popular multiplayer series looks poised to be the best yet.
go TW!! :bigthumb:

k.. just finished reading it. I guess it's a fair review, the only statement that made me go :ugh: was..
"Both graphically and combat-wise, it was hard not to notice the similarities between Tribes: Vengeance and the current class of Unreal Tournament games. Although Tribes: Vengeance will feature classic Tribes weapons like the Spinfuser (a pseudo-rocket launcher that fires explosive discs at enemies), the current combat has a definite UT vibe to it.."
I refuse to judge the game before I acctually play it (except maybe criticise the graphics.. MAKE TEH MORTAR BOOM BIGGER!!).. but I would really hate to see it become ut with jetpacks and stormhammers in the end.

Depends on what they mean by more UT feel. Visually, it does feel more UTish.
Darkfire 01-31-2004, 05:13 PM At least they aint comparing it to cs or battlefield this time :p
