Imposter 01-30-2004, 10:13 PM IGN has slapped up their review of the Tribes: Vengeance press conference event that took place last night. It's a pretty long read and covers a lot of good stuff. Here's a rip:
Most players new to the game feel that it's too slow compared to other first-person shooters. This is the first change the team is making. The jetpack will have a much greater acceleration this time, allowing players to get in the air with a tremendous rush of speed. They've also managed to change the controls a bit. Players of the previous game remember the intricacies of aerial control. Since the jetpack blows out from behind, you have to twist your body in order to change direction in flight. Now, even without using your jets, you can use the WASD keys to move around in the air. This new technique is called drifting. Having played through the game in multiplayer, we found that the speed has noticeably increased for the heavy armor types.
Other players dislike the larger maps that Tribes has been known for. While it offers some terrific tactical options for players who want to maneuver around enemies rather than confront them directly, new players are typically frustrated when it takes them more than thirty seconds to find some action. This prompted the second change the team is making to the franchise so, consequently, the game will offer some smaller maps this time around that put players in conflict sooner. Hopefully there will still be plenty of maps that offer enough room and cover for players to find their way across a map without necessarily running into lots of enemies along the way. Still, the player with a one-minute attention span will find action before they get bored. Thankfully the team has said that they will include larger maps for 32 players that are more in line with what we've come to love about the franchise.
Be sure to check it out.
Dark Volcanic 01-30-2004, 10:14 PM OMG STUCK IN TRIBES TALK. I HATE YOU :fu:
1rd
And sounds like some good improvements were made too... some I think will be pretty controversial here though.
Chic0 01-30-2004, 10:15 PM Heavy speed increased? :bigthumb: Pimps up, Ho trains up too now baby :]
32 player maps? So they're not going to t1 sized teams? bleh >:/
bartkusa 01-30-2004, 10:17 PM I'm listening to the IGN Interview.
1) Command map is still in; I didn't know this. Woo.
2) Deployables are like vehicles, ie, they exist in the world in a spawn location or something. You walk up and pick them up, and they take up weapon slots. To place a turret, you walk somewhere and hit the "fire" button to place them.
3) Spawn control is in.

Pleeeeaaaaase? :)
Mooley 01-30-2004, 10:44 PM While many players never bothered with the previous games' command maps, they were an excellent feature for coordinating the efforts of groups of players. We're hoping that a comparable feature can be included that will allow players to work together.
They said they were hoping, not that it would be in
Videeeeeeeeoooooooooooooo os
PLEASE.
Like now.
Someone who has access to them please download them.
I'm beggin' ya here.
Mooley 01-30-2004, 10:55 PM Many Tribes veterans are still confused by things like sensors, the command map and some of the less used features of the game. Even the simple task of choosing an armor type and outfitting yourself with weapons is too much for some players
Sigh*
Kaiser 01-30-2004, 10:59 PM The new flags trail smoke, for instance, making them easier to spot.
Not sure what I think of this.
Menzo 01-30-2004, 11:10 PM The smoke trail effect is extremely subtle. It's more of a graphical flourish than a tool to aid visibility.
nazbot 01-30-2004, 11:11 PM "The final multiplayer map set the action in a large underground tunnel network complete with stalagmites and stalactites."
:roller:
Theta 01-30-2004, 11:14 PM better than a big happy flag :p
SubhumaN 01-30-2004, 11:20 PM Not sure if I like the current flag,I like a normal flag more. but its still cool, and still early
bartkusa 01-30-2004, 11:29 PM There's a T2 Classic server named Aur|ora, where someone's been hacking around w/ the graphics. 3 floaty balls circle around the flag, leaving trails in the air. Not so useful for finding the capper, but it gives you a hint of the flag's trajectory when it's airborne.
I like throwing the flag, so I think flag trails are nifty as hell. Really helps w/ prediction when you don't have depth perception.
pyrot3chnic 01-30-2004, 11:49 PM "Luckily the Phoenix base includes lots and lots of round tunnels and curved surfaces that make this skiing technique really useful. Large, flat platforms and catwalks dominate the middle of most of these spherical rooms, allowing players to fight on a variety of levels and even drop down or jet up to avoid conflict."
I guess we don't know much about the Imp or BE interiors, but won't this make the bases a bit unbalanced? being able to take advantage of skiing in the roud-style CotP bases... assuming the other two will be different (imp square, BE spikes?)
Not sure what I think of this.
You can make this effect out in the press conference video. I think it looks just fine.

Are you sure about that or is it just because you say so, lol. A trail is exactly that. A trail. It's Evidence.
The trail on Aurora's flag certainly attracts my attention. Not saying I mind it, the effect does look cool.
Hoo_Man 01-31-2004, 01:46 AM The guys who reviews this obviously never saw t1 :p
