"Evidently, highly skilled players who can master skiing will even be able to ski across water once they reach an exceptionally high velocity (the effect was described as being similar to skipping a stone across a pond), though we were unable to see this feature in action." - Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/tribesvengeance/preview_6087190-2.html)

I wonder what "highly skilled players" and "exceptionally high velocity" equates to...

Hopefully it's not something only one in ten cappers can pull off...

...but not something that everyone can pull off all the time...

You have to be going fast enough and at the right angle. Mike, Ed, Thrax, Myself can do it so it isn't too hard, but it does take skill.

Kinda like "making a MA with a Disc by skipping it off water in T2" skill? Or just "intentionally skipping a disc off water in T2" skill?

Or somewhere in the middle?

How many times do you bounce or is it like a constant thing once you hit that sweet spot you just keep going?

.:ftard:................a nd can you use the grapling hook under water?:ftard:

From what I was able to guess it keeps going as long as you keep your speed. the nice thing though, water doesn't slow you down. It is actually fun. Not as bouncy as TR2, but very fun to play in.

Going INTO water doesn't slow you down? What gameplay effects does it have, if any?
Since refraction probably isn't an issue, what effect on gameplay will water have? In the case of T2, if you were capping and touched water, you were basically dead, so you had to avoid water like the plague.

Hopefully there will be some slowdown from being submerged in water, while maintaining speed is possible across the surface. Otherwise waterskiing would have no real purpose, other than being cool. Now I'm not suggesting the near dead stop T2 base forced on you when you hit water, something less effective on speed would be fine. Perhaps preventing acquiring increased velocity by skiing downhill underwater would be enough. Basically, whatever horizontal speed you had when you entered the water would be what you had, barring using your jetpack to alter it.

Hopefully water will have some effect, it's a waste just to be pretty. It will have to be something new since people don't want to slow down, there is no heat guided rocket to evade and it doesn't seem to hide you visually. Cool off your chaingun? heh

That's tribes 2 your're smelling.

At high speeds a water impact can be harder than hitting concrete . The reason being the water can't displace itself fast enough for the impact. A skipping stone is a great example, but the same thing could happen with a bullet or even an airplane given the correct angle.

Underwater movement also makes plenty of sense to be mobile. Sure, water is viscus, but look at a shark. It's extremely agile underwater and pretty damn heavy as well.

He said the surface didnt slow you down, he didnt say anything about being IN the water. If you listend to the broadcast lastnight you would've heard KPs reasons for why the water is how it is. Which I dont feel like restating.

Ok. I smell someone with no common sense. You're trying to apply 2004 tech and general rules to a complete fantasy game 1000+ years in the future. Didn't you know that the Water Displacer Speed Generator 3000 was invented in 2901 which lets you move through water faster than air?

The point is, trying to apply todays "realism" to obscure elements within a game that has utterly nothing to do with realism on many fronts is ridiculous and completely stupid.

Now to further go on my quick point. The water displacer speed generator 3000 works off your jetpack system. The jetpack charges the water nearby making it have no drag or effect on your armor, making its effect lesser than air. It uses the energy created by charging the water as a consistant mini speed increase as well. Thus it makes perfect sense for armors to jet faster around in water than in air.

Actually, at one point irl there was research in a device that removed water infront of an object creating a vacuum and propelling it forward at extremly high speeds.

I'm just hoping that the above/below/across water interface works well. For instance, if you get a disc high in the back while waterskiing it should shove you below the surface, possibly killing your velocity somewhat and screwing your route up... Or taking disc splash to the front to slow you down to just below threshold speed. Or take the edge of a mortar blast under the water, which would pop you up off the water, requiring good reflexes to get back on the water without hitting it too hard.

Could be useful for evading those nadelauncher happy chasers, waterski and watch as they waste thier rounds... or at least force them to attempt a disc intercept.

Only did that once, but it really cracked me up.
There I am, HoFing, and I'm not paying attention. This guy discs me off the stand, proceeds to fly up up and away. Only the disc shot sorta surprised me and I clicked as reflex... the disc skipped off the water and slowly went up up up up... boom, no more capper.
