Moolz 01-29-2004, 11:04 PM Needs melee tactics!!
You want to do something completley different and fun, that would own right there. =)
someone in #wofn suggested it could be done with mutators but however, it'd be a cool option. If I could plant it into your heads now.
I don't even think it would go against the tribes grain and even more-so since it's a prequel. That would be fun as hell.
Just an idea :) You could officially call it "bloodsport" or something :D
Sir Lucius 01-29-2004, 11:13 PM They need someone to instigate a fumble easily, but I don't think melee is the way. In fact, it's pretty damn hard to get close combat to someone on the run.
With that in mind, I think the game will take what we know from chasing and use that.
To fumble the ball on some you take off a small ammount of health. Why do I think only a small ammount? The reason being there has to be a reason to pass. In tribes it'd be much easier to just run stight for the net (aka cowboy). So defense should have an advantage, and I think that advantage would be making it easy to knock the ball out of a player's hands. Thus to get the ball into the goal you'd have to fake out the other team.
I don't see melee falling anywhere in that. I think it'll draw from what's been done in ctf: chasing, running, flag pickup, dueling, and then added in passing.
Moolz 01-29-2004, 11:17 PM Well it'd certainly inspire you to keep closer to your target which in itself, in t1 was a great skill. I remember trying like hell to chase a capper (t1) on his super ski around the map aka roller coaster. You had to be damn good to catch him.
It's just an idea and if it sparks other ideas or for ball, so be it.
Sir Lucius 01-29-2004, 11:25 PM Melee sounds cool and all, but I just can't see hand to hand combat being there.
Not only does it require unique animation, but you have to make it more powerful to make up for the range (or else it's worthless) and you'll usually just end up with something that's unfun on the reciving end.
Body checking, however, I could see working quite well. Running into a player at high speeds and causing them to fumble might be intersting. So in that sense, if the melee was touch automatic, it actually might work pretty well.
slogg 01-29-2004, 11:29 PM seems like TR2, id guess it is going to be quite a bit (not exactly, but very very very very very close to TR2)
TR2 was fun, the guy who made TR2 made Ball... hmmm could they possibly be anything alike?
nah
Sir Lucius 01-29-2004, 11:34 PM I don't think the purpose of Ball will be style. I think it will be to get the ball into the goal. The reason I'm taking that approach is how much thrax likes to trumpet KISS. The complicated scoring system of passing would be better off tallied in front of a panel of figure skating judges.
KillerONE 01-29-2004, 11:36 PM ^^^ Word to the T to the : to the V ^^^
:)
Father Ruckus 01-29-2004, 11:38 PM hope each team can have a fatty as a goalie :)
Moolz 01-29-2004, 11:44 PM Body checking sounds cool! :)
Moolz 01-29-2004, 11:46 PM It's just the idea of the standard guns in a ball game seems kinda ... lame. Dunno why.
Perhaps they could make different weapons just for ball. :D Maybe the grappling hook work well here. lol - imagination is good.

you know, in the CGM mag back in july, there was a story board of julia doing a flip kick to someone's face and then grabbing the ball and taking off.
Shit like that would be pretty damn fun to watch.
Moolz 01-29-2004, 11:49 PM lol, exactly :)
They did indeed indicate parts of tribes were a spectator sport and wanted to take some of it in this direction. This would add extreme entertainment value to the game!
Expansion perhaps? :P

Expanding on this, I couldn't really much get into tr2 because of the duel-ality of the game. Also newbies coming in and trying to make it a death match was annoying. All the more to change or nerf weapons mayhaps.
Sir Lucius 01-30-2004, 12:02 AM Since the only person you should really be attacking is whoever has the flag, I think they should have the health guage be the fumble guage. No knock downs or anything like that unless you have the ball. And even then, maybe 1 second immunity after a ground pickup (to prevent all the spam you get from people trying to 'disc' to ball -- basically make their efforts worthless even more so).
Something like that is what I would envsion, but reguardless of what they do, I'm sure KP has something great in store.

did you ever play TR2?
Sir Lucius 01-30-2004, 12:11 AM did you ever play TR2?
Yes. They addressed most of the problems. I'm just saying I don't see why you even need to have knockdowns from players not touching the ball. I think it could help if you focus even more on the ball.

nice, that would rock.
cant wait to try this in the arena map with a crowd :) and hopefully crowd sounds :D
but goalies are a must :D
Wulfen 01-30-2004, 12:35 AM Grenade spam was the absolute worst. A grounded flag would quickly attract 3,472 grenades in about 2 seconds.
Ixiterra 01-30-2004, 01:51 AM I think ball defense might be easier than you think, Lucius. First of all, you've got the offense at home base because they're chasing the ball carrier. So you have your entire team on him, whereas O will only have half. Second of all, that goal didn't look too big, two lights could easily cover that as goalies and block a significant number of shots. There would probably be a specific O role that would deal with the goalies. In fact, even split half way between goalie killers and ball carrier chasers.
This could be a very interesting gametype. ;) We've talked about it before, except with a flag, no passing (at least, not like the ball). A ball adds a new, unique concept to it though.
TreW_SoulJa 01-30-2004, 02:40 AM when i played TR my specialty was Kidney Theif Steals, that's where you smack into the rabbit w/ the flag which steals it for high points. I would love to be rewarded for a similar skill (getting within point blank range of the speeding guy w/ the ball) in this 'ball' game you guys are talking about (havn't seen the video).
