pyrot3chnic 01-30-2004, 12:52 AM I thought it went great.. I love everything the game is so far. There's only one thing bothering me.. the big green boom seems small, and the trail looks too skinny. ( maybe it's just the video.. )
Other than that little peeve, everything looks sweet.
GreeD 01-30-2004, 12:53 AM Ok i can't hold it back anymore about this mine disc stuff. It has been around for a VERY long time. Even before the idea to script it, if you were on light D throwing a mine out to stop the grab was COMMON FUCKING SENCE. What else do you use to stop the capper besides body block? I don't know about you but I would rather stop the capper BEFORE a flag grab then to play chase the flagtard. Then unless he hits the ground once or twice, it requires a chain gun (unless sniped or a bad ass MA) but oh wait the chain gun is cheap also! Well hell why dont i see if i can ram the guy with my head.
Its not cheap its a tactic and a good one... Try mine discing Natural or any other good capper, it is still hard and you will miss often. Good capper don't wine about it they just find away to beat it.
Sorry had to vent...
Moolz 01-30-2004, 01:03 AM I under stand your plight but I disagree. It is cheap! It's so fucking cheap that everyone is doing it! With interplote and the dime a dozen snipers in t2 now youy're lucky to get TO the flag stand without getting lazed to shit. Even on a FAST route if you make with half health you can expect a good hearty mine disk or two ... or three.
Granted to speak of pubs on the most part. If you have no Offense you're just gone. Plain and simple. In competition it's more viable for sure though.
-Striker- 01-30-2004, 01:11 AM The cloak pack adds a different dimension to the game

Stage01 01-30-2004, 02:03 AM How could you possibly jump to conclusions so quickly? God, that bothers me when people do that.
I corrected myself. At first I heard him saying all these things about tribes that blew my mind...and I was like WTF he knows nothing....but later he kinda contradicted himself and changed what he was saying...plus I said "nvm I take it back" so sorry for offending you.

RegisteredFruit 01-30-2004, 02:22 AM Don't get too worried about movement in the air. I think it's supposed to me more of a glide than a change of direction, and it will still obide by the movment physics.
If anything, this could add another tiny element of skill to the game.
In T1/T2, if you let yourself run out of jet energy, you are penalized by not being able to dodge in the air. Adding "glide" gets rid of this penalty, which is not a good thing IMO.

They were talking to the gaming press. What did you expect them to relate to? Deer Hunter?
I hate counter-strike comparisons as much as the next guy, but you have to put things in terms people understand...and most people understand counterstrike.
Mr Fish 01-30-2004, 02:35 AM for those worried about the glide, here are 3 facts:
1. it is *extremely* subtle, you can't do crazy sudden direction changes with it... it just adds a little bit of precision to jetpack control
2. it doesnt in any way remove the penalty for running out of energy. if you run out of energy you plumet to the ground. full stop. gliding a tiny amount while plummeting to the ground isnt going to help anyone :)
3. as with everything in the movement system, it can be fully tweaked by the deisgners on the fly. i expect its something that we will tweak the hell out of as we approach shippin time, but its already pretty good imo.
Void|deadjawa 01-30-2004, 02:36 AM so, i missed the beginning, what are the 4 packs? Or didnt they reveal them?

Gallium 01-30-2004, 03:33 AM i think it is funny when forum trolls lecture towards players about how the game works.
as if natural doesnt know how to use energy to ski in T1
i wonder if this glide thing will make heavy skiing more skillful, i have a feeling that proper gliding will increase what routes you can use 10-fold after discovering exactly how it works.

How does stating your opinions/concerns qualify as "lecturing"? It was a valid concern.
Anyways, now that Mr. Fish has clarified things, I like the idea.
s0ber 01-30-2004, 04:09 AM We didn't see the Starsiege video.. wasn't that suposed to happen ?
-Striker- 01-30-2004, 04:18 AM sober I think they were short on time? Or maybe they saw it after the feed was over
Ixiterra 01-30-2004, 04:58 AM I only watched the last 10 minutes or so, but the discs seemed fine to me. I think they just apeared slower because the trail was so ridiculously long.
Mortar looked good, except it fired a bit fast and traveled a bit fast for my tastes.
The glide thing I didn't see, so I can't comment, but it doesn't sound like a good idea to me. That will definitely require testing though.
I consider mines a unique and fun element of Tribes, so I hope they don't get rid of them.
Didn't see the CG, how was the spinup time, and did it lockup after a period like was rumored?
Thrax Panda 01-30-2004, 05:16 AM Dude, all my newbie friends call tribes slow. TRIBES IS SLOW FOR NEWBS. I thought they were right on the ball with that.Tribes is also very slow (very very slow) when you are on the ground running. If you don't know how to ski yet, it's much slower than Quake or Unreal. Even after your learn to ski, it's still slow when you're indoors in comparison to those games.
Another way to look at is that Quake and Unreal are "QUICK", while Tribes is "FAST". Some of the things that KP talked about address this and make Tribes "Quicker" while still being "Fast". It's just a different perspective. If you step back you can see that both "camps" are right. Tribes is slow, and fast.
