we've known for ages that there would be an open beta. anything else would be retarded.

as long as they dont rush the beta, we'll be fine. I've seen games come out with open beta's just filled with bugs, and when the full version comes out, lots of people are so turned off by it they pass it up. shame really

those people are called morons. the beta should end on release day or slightly after (morph it into the demo perhaps)? by that time, if they haven't fixed the bugs, THEN you got a reason to not get the game. because the game was buggy when the beta first opened up is a shitty reason to not get a game.

It may be a shitty reason but a shitty beta would make you think the real game is shitty, would it not?

When you say "beta" I remember a thread from an "offical guy" asking us for our ideas for the demo version of t:V, which will also be the beta, Tribes isnt a MMORPG, it dosnt need to be publicly tested.
Yes it does. How are they supposed to know if they got it right without a public beta? There are always bugs in any game. Better that they try to squash as many as possible before the official release than after.
I don't care how many beta testers they have in-house, nothing shakes loose the obscure bugs like a public beta.

Maybe.
But people who think that are stupid.
It's a BETA for christssakes. It's expected that it is going to be a less than perfect work in progress.
Besides, the game review sites review the final product, not the beta. :)

Yes, but I'm talking about the non-current tribes players. I dont think Tribes 2 got enough players/popularity, this may have been because of such a cruddy beta?

As SubHuman said, we want an "ok" beta, not a perfect one =P

And sorry about my comment from yesterday, I agree now, we do need a public beta. But will the beta be set up with like 3 levels like a demo? Thats more onto the point of what I was trying to say

i made a distinction between the condition of the game on the last day of the beta, and the first. the first day is expected, if its still shitty on the last day, then its something to worry about.

T2 didnt have an open beta. T2 was shitty on release, that was the biggest problem with players/popularity.
