Sorry buddy, you didn't get a computer with a Radeon 9800 Pro for $580. Even the 128MB version retails for at least $300. And Dell's current $600 PC comes with an onboard video card that uses system memory.
I can understand your skepticism, this deal (and similar ones) pop up every few months at Dell. A lot of other people got in on it too. Here's a link to the discussion:

In this case, we bought it for our office and ours was a little cheaper because we had a $40 credit from an RMA. We didn't need the 9800 for anything at the office, but we did need a new computer with MS Office and XP. When T:V comes out I'll swap the 9800 into my home computer :D.

Btw, the most recent deal was a P4 2.6HT/512 DDR400 with a 18" LCD and all the trimmings for $831.

That's still hardly a deal. A crappy system with a good video card. Can't say about the $800 system as I don't have the specs.

I wouldn't call it a crappy system - I'd bet that it is better than the average system around here. I've built/upgraded many computers. When you have to start from scratch it's tough to beat a price like this. The price is good for the parts alone (which can be swapped into any computer)

P4 2.6C HT $163 (prices from newegg)
256MB DDR400 $40
Office2003 $162
XP $91
80GB HD $80

That's $536 before shipping. For an extra $50 we got a case, power supply, mobo, keyboard, mouse, CDROM, CDRW. And all of that is before we include the 9800.

I'm not saying this is always the best way to go, but in our situation it fit our needs, time, and budget.

Depends on what we're testing. Whatever is appropriate. The lab tests aren't about bugs or performance, so we usually overkill as much as possible to remove that as a variable. Focus tests are about "is this fun, do new users understand this, is this character good, what age-group does this resonate with, etc."

Well, right there is why you need to beta test with the users of TW, who are more than willing to help out, myself included. What I remember most from the T2 patch days, was it would screw up on configurations the teams never tested on, mostly older equipment. I would scratch my head thinking, how can this happen? Now I know how. You need a larger sample of computers to try your software on, and that's US. I have a P3 1GHz with a Ti4400. Have you tried that configuration yet? Maybe, maybe not, but I'll do it for you. Sure I'm going to upgrade, but I'm still going to try it on my old machine.

The netcode is what I'm worried about. I want more than 32 players on a server, and again, the only way to do that, is to let us beta test with you.

To end it, I predict T:V will be similar to UT2K5 in terms of system specs. Whatever runs UT2K5 that fastest, is what I'm building.

Yeah except T:V isn't going to have a closed beta test like T2 did. So you will be able to test your computer, and so will thousands of others. And why would you want more than 32 people on a server? That's yucky. ;)

I'm not in any clans, don't have any friends in the gaming world besides the people on the web, I'm 39. Whenever I play on pubs with 32 or less people, the games are usually lopsided. When I play on HV with 60, the games are usually even. If you're playing on a server of 30, and two people on your team suddenly leave, you're at a huge disadvantage. Two people leave on HV, it's no big deal, and they are usually replaced quickly.

Yes, I know pubs blow, hopefully there will be a TW Tribe that is for fun. But I still hope T:V can handle at least 40 people on a server.

how can you play with that many people? With that many people it's not CTF, it's deathmatch with two flags.

My computer specs are 730MHz, 128 RAM and a GeForce4 MX 420. Highly doubt I'll be able to play it on this computer, but one can hope.::(

Anyone know the specs of last night conference computers? Wouldn't mind getting a general idea of how my system compares!
