Savage 01-19-2004, 04:11 PM allright so my parents bought me a Sony VAIO for xmas. It was free so I didn't complain but it's brand new and it's allready a POS. It has some good parts but it's plagued with problems.
here are the specs,
P4 2.8gig with 800mhz fsb
512mb of ddr ram (not sure of what brand or speed)
Dvd/CD-rw burner
19" Sony Flat Panel LCD monitor (it's descent, 20ms response time)
GeForce FX 5200 (originally came with an ati 9200 but they had it upgraded)
80gig WD 7200rpm HD
120v power supply
Mother Board: Have no clue what kind. Just has Sony and Kirin plastered all over it
Windows XP home
Now here are the problems,
-random reboots (sometimes it doesn't even boot back up)
-random screen flashes (screen will just go black for a few seconds then goes back)
-right clicking on the desktop takes up 30 - 50% cpu. 100% if I do several fast clicks.
-shitty fps. get 60 - 120 in T1, get down to 12 fps in cs sometimes. 5 - 20fps in Halo with full graphics. Anti-Aliasing off.
-no windows xp cd or system recovery disc. the only thing I have is "VAIO Recovery Wizard" software.
:/
fatalerror 01-19-2004, 05:05 PM it is under warranty. send it back.
iNVAR 01-19-2004, 09:14 PM and here's where the + side of a prebuilt comes in: you call up Sony support and ask them "what the fuck"
no offense. :)
kwolf 01-19-2004, 09:36 PM First thing I do when I buy any type of pre-built PC: fdisk
BigWinky 01-21-2004, 03:51 PM -random reboots (sometimes it doesn't even boot back up)
Faulty power supply? dumb question, but is the battery charged?
-random screen flashes (screen will just go black for a few seconds then goes back)
Try new Detonators... and turn off any power saving features that your monitor has.
-right clicking on the desktop takes up 30 - 50% cpu. 100% if I do several fast clicks.
Try windows update? This one is a bit fucked up...
-shitty fps. get 60 - 120 in T1, get down to 12 fps in cs sometimes. 5 - 20fps in Halo with full graphics. Anti-Aliasing off.
CS 1.6 has known problems with FPS. Join the club
Halo runs like ass on all computers, basically. I wouldn't expect much more than that on a desktop system. Check out some benchies of the game.
-no windows xp cd or system recovery disc. the only thing I have is "VAIO Recovery Wizard" software.
Welcome to the world of OEM.... get a hold of XP pro and throw it on.
Krobar 01-21-2004, 05:39 PM wtf are you talking about Halo runs like ass on all computers? runs great on my xp2700/512mb of ram/gf4ti4200 64mb
iNVAR 01-21-2004, 05:44 PM sorry, you are wrong. halo runs like a piece of shit on everyone's computer assuming you try a reasonable resolution like 1024x768x32bit. it's obviously jerky and slow, but then again, maybe you just didn't notice because the movement was so slow that it felt smooth even though it wasn't.
Krobar 01-21-2004, 11:07 PM was that english? and was it directed at me or the other guy? I'm running it in 1024 x768 x 32 and it runs fine for me, very occasionally I get some loss of fps in a huge firefight in a rockets only map indoors or something like that.
Emilee 01-22-2004, 04:02 AM Id say it was directed at you. "runs great" to you, is more than likely "like crap" to most others. The only way it would run "great" on your PC is, if you turn down the quality most if not all the way in game, and in your drivers.
Barbarian 01-22-2004, 07:22 AM radeon 9200 -> geforcefx 5200 is a downgrade
Most likely your motherboard is made by Intel, to Sony specs. That's what most OEMs do.
iNVAR 01-22-2004, 03:59 PM was that english? and was it directed at me or the other guy? I'm running it in 1024 x768 x 32 and it runs fine for me, very occasionally I get some loss of fps in a huge firefight in a rockets only map indoors or something like that.
yes, it was english. which part did you not understand? here's the breakdown
sorry, you are wrong.means exactly what it says
halo runs like a piece of shit on everyone's computer assuming you try a reasonable resolution like 1024x768x32bit.means exactly what it says
it's obviously jerky and slow, but then again, maybe you just didn't notice because the movement was so slow that it felt smooth even though it wasn't.i can see how this might be confusing but next time you insult someone's english, make fucking sure it's not just your stupidity preventing you from properly reading it.
this means Master Chief moves slow in Halo. everything feels smooth in halo because he moves slow. VERY slow. you don't even get a chance to make him turn fast to feel the jerkiness. yeah, you can up the sensitivity only so much.
whatever, point remains: halo is a piece of shit on the pc.
Krobar 01-22-2004, 09:04 PM now see breaking it up I understand you, but it doesn't make me agree with you in any way, shape, or form. So I'll just agree to disagree, and I wasn't insulting your intelligence, it read as a run on sentence and I still think it's missing a comma or semi-colon which (until you broke it up) still made the sentence seem to not make sense to me. I understood the point you were trying to make though....but again, I disagree, and apparently so do thousands of other people since every night when I go to play some Halo there's 19 pages of servers that are full/almost full that I ping under 150 to.
Back to the thread at hand though, no I have no idea why it would be screwing up, but I'd bet Data's on the right track.
I'm not on any track. I was just mentioning who probably made his MB, since he didn't seem to know.
