i have 3 hdd's, 2 internal.. the one in question is an external maxtor 80gb which we shall call i:\

it all started when i stupidly deleted a file with the extension .tmp from my i:\ root dir (to which my OS does not reside on) (i should stop doing crap like this) anyway, after i rebooted and get into windows, mem dump. i reboot and scandisk tells me it has to check for consistency on the drive so i let it do it's thing. it finds a crapload of unreadable segments & orphan files (95% of the drive is mp3s). after it's done checking i go back into windows only to get mem dump'd again. or if i'm lucky i won't experience a mem dump, but if i try to access the i:\, it just says inaccessible and something about an IO error i think.

My conclusion is that i'll have to format. anyone have any differing thoughts?

i've tried taking it to a friend's comp. it doesn't memdump on his pc but gives the 'inaccessible... IO device" error
