I just ordered this from newegg...
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?descr iption=35-112-003&catalog=62&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1
from the reviews it looks like a very nice heatsink, many people are happy with it. My question is, can i use just a normal case fan such as this one...

or should I go something different? If so do you have any recommendations? I'd like to have an LED fan on my cpu as i think it'd be kinda cool and it would add on to the rest of my LED fans.

you have a p4? cause that's a p4 heatsink. just doublechecking. :)
make sure you have some GOOD thermal compound, like artic silver. the stuff they give you is acceptable. but thermal pads suck.
fan looks ok. $5 for shipping a fan though?

yeah i have a p4, and i ordered arctic silver 5 as well, didnt even realize the shipping cost tho :P. Do you think I should have the fan blowing towards the heatsink/cpu, or away from the heatsink/cpu? I'm not sure which is best for cooling.
Depends entirely on the heatsink and airflow in your case. :p

i have fans suckin air in from the front, and 2 fans in the back and one on top pushing air out. I have a fan on the side panel as well, atm it is blowin air out but I don't know what is best for that either, Im pretty sure my system would be cooler if that side fan was blowin air in, I just havent gotten around to flipping it. I guess if i have my side panel fan blowing in then i'll want the cpu fan blowin towards the heatsink, if i want the side panel fan blowin out then ill have the cpu fan blowin away from the heatsink. That makes sense right?

check the information for that heatsink, or maybe it'll come with instructions. optionally, email the alpha people. it depends on the heatsink.

http://www.alphanovatech.com/dxf/X001ZF1F-01.pdf shows fan sucking away from heatsink. thus you should reorient your case fan to properly take that into account

yeah, just saw that myself, thanks for the help! This looks like a good heatsink, im lookin forward to seein how well it does :).
That looks like a shorter version of the PAL8045, which I use in my main workstation. They are very good heatsinks.
By the way, mine blows away from the CPU. That's supposedly the best direction because of the fan cowl.

Fans in the back near the power supply can potentially recirculate the hot air coming out of the PS, so it's best to have the fan in the back blowing out in concert with the PS fan. I actually overheated my 'puter this way once I stuffed the thing into it's corner; the hot air had no where else to go but back into the box.
