dx9 killed my sound..? [Archive]

so i installed direct x 9.0b when i was trying to get tribes running again. and it didn't do the trick. when i packed up and moved, and got cable here. i got all the new drivers out for my shit and tribes ran fine... now; however, winamp has stopped playing mp3s and any sort of music, and tribes doesn't have any sound. Windows Media Player works fine, though.

possibly useful information:
WinXP
athlon xp 1800+
soyo dragon plus mobo

DX9 is the only thing that i had installed when the problems started.
