a buddy of mine is looking to upgrade his pos puter. but he doesn't want to spend the money needed to get new components. He said his limit is 100$ right now, and that's for a new vid card, and possibly a cd burner of some kind.

I told him he could prolly buy a decent used vid card for 50$, and a cd burner for like 40$. however, he wants me to check out my sources. this being one of em, do any of you guys have any spare parts laying around that you don't want? and would be willing to part w/ for not really a whole lot? if so, toss out what you have and what you'll sell it for, and i'll pass along the information.

thx.

btw,

i'm reformatting his system to win2k, and he says his mobo only supports 300Mb of ram, altho his ****ty winME recognizes the 512 chip in there. and it's some AMD processor, but i danno the speed on it.

any other questions?

if you pay attention to the forums at www.fatwallet.com in the hot deals section, you can find cd writers for $0-$10 after rebate. i got my cendyne 48x writer for -$10 (yes, i MADE $10 on it) after 2 rebates.

as for vid card, what does he have now, so i can maybe offer input on what would be a good upgrade?

and what speed and ram type does he have? it's no use upgrading the vidcard if the rest of the system is holding him back.

I have a Radeon 64MB DDR w/ ViVo.... its a bit better than the 7200 since it only has 32mb SDRAM. I guess i could sell it for 45 + shipping.

should leave you plenty of money for a good cdrw too.

EBAY SEARCH - Geforce 4 ti 4200 (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A %2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2 F&krd=1&from=R8&MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&query=geforce4+ti4200+)

Like others said, you would be dumb to pay more then $15 for a new 48/52 write, 24/12 rewrite drive. They are so cheap these days that when our regular cd drive went out, we just bought another cdrw drive for 10 bucks. It probably would have cost us 15 for a regular drive. The only catch is that you better be good at doing rebates.
