What is interpolate?

I realize this has probably been asked and answered many times, but I'm just getting back into Tribes1 after being away for over a year and kept seeing people commenting about this on servers.

So I was just wondering what exactly it is? I know it has something to do with chaingun and aiming. So can someone clear this up for me? thanks
