-\/iTAL- 12-27-2003, 08:32 PM Here in australia, our main communications giant is 'Telstra' and these great people havent done to much in the way of getting broadband connections around australia, prices are high and quality is low, well a few months ago i went to get myself broadband only to find im 200metres to far from the telephone exchange to get adsl, there is no cable in my area and so im stuck with a 56k (by the way, i live in the a main metropolitan area).
Enough about my life story, what i was wondering is, will T:V run aswell on 56k as tribes 2, or will it be virtually unplayable without broadband, or will i be able to play at all??
At the moment i can play just aswell as the next person in tribes 2 except for maybe the number of MA's i get, will it be the same?
Got Haggis? 12-27-2003, 08:34 PM can you play Unreal 2k3 okay, or unreal 2 xmp okay? same engine, so if you can play those, you should be okay. not sure if they are making any changes to the netcode or not.
TreW_SoulJa 12-27-2003, 08:51 PM they're changing the netcode a lot as far as i understand. Traditionally it ran great on 56k in T2 and T1 so i assume it will run comparably in T:V. Since i dont know the real answer i'm just trying to give you hope until thrax responds :)
Ixiterra 12-27-2003, 09:17 PM Yes, I believe it has been said that T:V will still run on a 56k, but probably not as well as T1 or T2.
NAT Mav 12-27-2003, 10:52 PM You won't be an uber-1337 chainwhore or sniper, you I'm sure you'll be able to play.
If the talk about only sending the client information that it needs(i.e. in view) then the netcode 'should' be more 56k friendly. Less info means less lag.
random 12-27-2003, 11:50 PM You also might be able to get ADSL. Usually Telco's/ISP's perform a Line Test to see how far you are away from the telephone exchange, and there's a certain distance that it may work, but with no guarantees, or at slower speeds.
i.e: They can provision + install your DSL, but if you have connection problems or slow connection speeds, you can't whine to them about it.
It might pay to give them another call and ask if this is the case.
NAT Mav 12-28-2003, 02:00 AM I would also imagine that your pings shouldn't be too bad over there if you play on Australian servers, but I don't know how well connected Australia is.
-\/iTAL- 12-28-2003, 02:11 AM at the moment in Tribes 2, on australian servers with a 56k which runs at 45.6k i get between 150 and 250.

t2 never ran great on 56k.
depends on your definition of great, i guess.

That's not bad at all. I would expect T:V to be a little better optimized than T2.
Volenti 12-28-2003, 06:59 AM Did you apply for ADSL through Telstra or another provider? Telstra will often be gay with the limits if another provider asks if you are "in range", wheres if you get it through telstra directly they'll like, actually test your line n'stuff, if you whinge at them long enough.
TreW_SoulJa 12-28-2003, 08:05 AM Actually australia's connections are way better than USA's. They ping maybe 20 more to the east coast than i do from the west coast. Europe is the same way. I ping like shit to europe/aus but they ping so much better. I'm automatic 200+ to them and they get 150's to us.
Amadeus 12-28-2003, 09:17 AM And I thought that my average ping of 172 to United States Rangers was bad... :p

i think most aussies average 200 to west coast, and then whatever you add to go to east, and america is in the midddle so we ping 200 to you and then 350 or so to europe.
buize 12-28-2003, 12:28 PM I ping 250 to Australia from east coast.
Thrax Panda 12-28-2003, 02:45 PM Unreal is a bit less efficient than T2 was. We're optomizing it, but there is only so much we can do with the replication system they have in place. We're not (as was previously said in this thread) rebuilding the netcode to any significant extent. We are making changes and optomizations, so our hope is that it will be better than Unreal 2k3, but it's too early to guarantee that.
Amadeus 12-28-2003, 08:32 PM Well, good optomizing then... :)

I can't say I've played on many aussie servers, but I ping around 120-140 on euro servers, and I'm central US. It's mildly annoying when you're used to 60, but still easily playable.
