WarChilde 12-25-2003, 01:33 AM will demos be stuck in the FOV of the individual recording the demos?
it'd would be nice to have the ability to change FOV when watching the recordings (not in mid-playback, but before watching)
example: demo was made in 120 FOV. I'd like to watch it in some other FOV other than 120 before I start the demo.
Yes, and make sure you can REWIND !!!. Also, if the demo called for models/skins that the player acctually had that would be nice too. That way when the model/skin replacements eventually come out, we can go ahead and say base for tournament play, and the rec. wont work if they arent in base.
Just a thought.

It's always been that way.

They can't make it rewind. It doesn't work. As for skins, unless you want enormous file sizes, they're gonna match whatver the client playing it has set (which isn't always default).
Demos aren't movies, they're collections of data that the client receives from the server.

to change or not to change?
i dont understand.
Shinigami 12-25-2003, 02:27 AM Demos do not record FOV.
[meph]DooM! 12-25-2003, 02:55 AM Tribes 2 demos are all sorts of fucked up regarding FoV for some unknown reason..
Shinigami 12-25-2003, 03:05 AM Oh I didn't know that. I wonder why.
-Striker- 12-25-2003, 03:06 AM Yes, and make sure you can REWIND !!!
Very, very, very difficult.
Not only that, but it must be coded into the engine.
And, they arn't writing the engine.
Amadeus 12-25-2003, 03:25 AM Plus, it would make demo files 10 times larger.

dude, they bought the engine. they can rewrite it.

no.
-Striker- 12-25-2003, 05:25 AM dude, they bought the engine. they can rewrite it.
They could, but its not very cost effective.
I mean, diving into an engine you didn't write yourself, in order to modify the code to do a very complicated function, all for the net result of rewindable demos, which in all honesty, won't move any more product.
-Striker- 12-25-2003, 05:29 AM Plus, it would make demo files 10 times larger.
Yeah there is no reason to make the demo files larger, since a demo is just a recording of the info recieved from the server and the client input, rewindable or not.
Adept 12-25-2003, 05:47 AM i havent totally thought this through, but my after reading the 10 times larger thing, i started thinking about using two interleaved network streams as a demo.. one would be the original, normal stream, while the other would be the reverse of each action. several potential problems, but at first glance, it seems doable..
These are professional programers. They can do WHATEVER they like. The fact that you think that it wouldn't be possible to rewind a demo is because one of them prolly said that a while ago because they don't want to put the hassle into making it work. Let's be honest.. they will be able to do 99% of what they want to do, so they prolly just don't want to put the effort into allowing demos to rewind.

Uh, no. I say that because they would have to completely change how demos are made. They would have to instead become movies, which completely defeats the purpose of a demo. This would require huge amounts of resources in game and huge file sizes.
That all aside, I believe a dev said it wasn't going to happen.

Considering they've been 'diving into the engine' for the past 2 years, I don't think there's much to worry about..
Now creating rewindable demos, I've got a feeling they won't bother with it (as 99% of other developers don't try, because it's harder than it sounds).
jotun 12-25-2003, 06:01 PM i think rewindable demos would basically require rewriting the whole engine to run in reverse

yea.. that MUST be it.. So you know exactly how the unreal engine works and know that it 'would basically require rewriting the whole engine'?
I am willing to bet that you dont have the quarter million(or watever) that you need to own the unreal engine. SO PLEASE Stay the fuck out of this conversation.

half-life has this capability SO STFU.
