I noticed that the weapon skins are really detailed in first person but when you are looking at someone else the skins seem to show up blurry on the players weapon? why is this?

p.s not sure if the pics im looking at are low graphics detail pics or what :/

The player who made the screenshots forgot to put on his glasses.

Heres an example of what i mean.

The disc skins are all blurry.

are you kidding? that doesn't look blurry at all. Put on YOUR glasses!

That looks like the standard skin for it, the grey one, which was fine and not very detailed to begin with.

Also, i am not sure of this, but i think it has something to do with saving bandwidth. Cut detail from the 3rd person, you save yourself the trouble of sending out so much data for every single weapon pulled out. All the server has to tell you is what weapon you are carrying, and you, the client, can just slap on that little place holder skin.

Then, i also wonder if your viewpoint is really along the helmet at all, and if your weapon is exactly where it should be according to view...

That's not bandwidth. Skins aren't tracked over a server. However, the texture detail is normally reduced at longer distances to raise performance of the game.

Yeah seriously why can't every texture in the game be 512x512 at every distance? We're getting gyped!

If the engine works like I think it does, different models are used for the 3rd person view of weapons to the 1st person view - which is a contrast to Tribes 2 for example where the same model is used constantly.

It's far less intensive for the engine to only have your own weapon textured and modelled at a high rate of detail whilst everyone else's is significantly less detailed. With most modern graphic cards the texture resolution doesn't really have a very noticable impact on performance though so I don't see why they can't be just as sharp for the 3rd person models, although less polygonic detail is to be expected on them. I dunno, maybe they just use quickly made or outdated models for the 3rd person views currently.

If I'm totally wrong on this theory and the Unreal engine doesn't do this feel free to correct me, but I think it does.

In ut2k3 it might be the same way. In script however the pickup item is a separate class from the held item. I don't think they are separate models though. I'll have to look at the code again.

btw, its called LOD, but that pic uses those crappy old disk skin anyway so its a moot point,

as far as I can remember... it's actually because the first and third person models are different? Like in ut2003 the minigun only spins up first person while it stays still and looks a lot uglier in 3rd person :( It's really noticable to me... but on the other hand in u2 xmp (another unreal engine game) I can't notice it at all... sooo I guess it depends on how it's done.

ugh, this applies for skinning i'd imagine..... so you have to skin something twice so it can show up in your hand and in the other persons.... or does this only apply to models?

I'm sure they're not. The engine can easily compress skins.

Hmm it looks pretty noticable to me so im hoping there will be an option for all high res weapon skins.

that definitely looks like a lower polygon model

It's supposed to be lower poly, why have the original 900+ poly there too... it would be useless...

Every other game (for the most part) has a world model as well, so that you don't have to render other peoples guns, only yours in your hand...

Yes i know that the model is low poly Mrsniper explained that before but that doesnt mean they have to put low res skins on the low poly models aswell does it :/
