Cursor for lyfe! its nice and open with a nice set of tactical keys around it, altho ive seen some newer keyboards try and gimp that section of the keys.

While i do use wasd in art apps (purely cause its forced bound etc) i always found the windows key terribly placed between the shift, ctrl and alt key in direct conflict with my pinky for gaming.

i made the swap to ESDF. Took me like 4 weeks to become COMPLETELY used to it, but it's perfect. I get weapon switch, health kit, zoom, ammo, zoom adjust (on the other side of ESDF so i can use a seperate finger to adjust zoom), pack -- it's all right there were i need it. Duck can be put on shift or X, and whatever. I have many more key and control options on ESDF.

Since im trying to work around the random exception error in Tribes 2 again, i reinstalled T1, and played a game, but i couldn't kill anything due to the huge ineffecency of keyboard setup. So i moved to keys to ESDF and set it up similar to T2, and i am god again.

Its nothing really to make the switch. 3 weeks of imperfection, maybe.

Personally, I don't care about what is default as long as there is a way for me to rebind it. I think most people feel the same way. New players are going to play with whatever is default, so use whatever dev preference is.

I use a natural (split) keyboard, so my options are somewhat limited.

WASD is my config of choice.

the worst is people who use mouse 1 for move forward, i once hopped on somebodies computer to play some tribes since i didnt have mine and she had mouse1 as move forward, i could fucking believe anyone could possibly play like that

You should try mine sometime.

Forward Mouse2
Back Space
L Strafe Q
R Strafe W
Fire Mouse1
Jump A
Jet Lshift (walk/run in other games)
Crouch Z
Mine S
Grenade E

Been using that basic setup for a good 6 six years now, even before Tribes, and for every FPS I've played.

WASD.
Numpad is plain stupid. What happens when you want to do a V command or type a team/global message? You have to move one hand across the keyboard for a V, and BOTH hands to type a message unless you are a master one handed typest.
With WASD you usually don't move you left hand more than 5cm to hit a V command and only move your right hand over to the keyboard for a typing message, then as your right hand gracefully hits enter it perfectly sits back on the mouse as though it never happened.
Well maybe the V command argument doesn't work for you T2 players who have stupid V menu's like 'VGAKSYE" as "Hi".

I don't care, cause when I get the game I'm gonna hook up my midi-piano keyboard. Diminished 7th of E Flat Major will be forward, D Minor chromatic will be backwards and so forth. Just take the Diatonic Minor Relative of the key to find the action it will do :) Why make life complicated with WASD? Pfftt.

ESDF for many many years now. It is just so much more logical as it gives you more keys right around your main movement keys. As well, it is the natural "home" position for typing, so it just feels right regardless.

can most of us agree that, roughly 15% of the people who play this game are fucked up?

Less than that, because some are left handed (which I guess does fit into your statement). I retract my comment.

I voted for WASD. But I think I've converted to ESDF after reading this thread.

There are so many better config setups.

I never thought I'd see the day I'd turn into a dirty ESDF user...

G33kb0n!x converted me to ESDF when we played Quake before T1 came out. Then during the T1 alpha I'd get the builds from Dynamix and change the key bindings before I'd put it on the server for the rest of the Sierra people. As a result, many people in Bellevue were converted to ESDF before T1 launched. We then convinced people at Dynamix to switch over for T2. It's a slow process, but soon everybody will be ESDF only ;)

I admit... I started t1 with the arrow keys, probably because darkforces was arrow keys? Then I decided I couldn't effectively spam taunts with the arrow keys, and that esdf was the most similar shape to the arrow keys with the most buttons around... also comfortable for my left hand.

Left handed people are mutants, that should be put to sleep.
