I use ESDF.

In regards to the default T:V keyboard config, which I believe this thread/poll is about, I say include both, and a couple of others as well. Most PS2 games come with several different selectable controller configs, would it really be that hard to add it to T:V?

Also, one of my suggestions that never made it into T2 was online player profiles / config storage. Imagine if your key config was able to be stored on a central T:V server. It wouldn't take up but a few KB of space (if that), and you'd be able to access from any computer you would want to play on.

For example, I go over to my friends house, he has T:V, but I can't play because I'd have to remap all his keys. Instead, if my config was available online, I'd be able to just log in, select an option to download my config, and wammo, I'm online with my custom config, and I didn't even have to carry around a CD/USB Key with me to do so.

Not only that, but when I'm done, my friend can use his config as he normally would.....

But maybe that's too complex for some people...hehe j/k :)

It's probably more effort than the dev's are willing to exert, and the space/bandwidth of hosting such data could be a lot. It's just something to consider.
(also posted in the TribesTalk thread)

Even though I use "wasd", you have a good idea, and I dont think configs will be too hard to store on-server.

80 or so areas to be filled in including the (x,y) location of each HUD(s) and if they are on/off, and each key binded.

thats like .4 KB per person.

I agree, T:V should ship with 5 or so of the most common configs. And you should be able to store as many pre-saved configs as you want. And there would be an option to upload your config to the server, and it overwrites the old one you had uploaded. kinda like your AIM buddyicon.

It would also be cool if there is clan-support within the online area like T2 (with tags) and maybe player-profiles that will include if you beat singleplayer, and what was your best time/difficulty...and will autoupdate your profile when you do better. And the config can be saved into that area of your profile.. and when you are logged in to your account, you can download the config, and it will update your config listings with the one you downloaded from your profile.

WASD just feels so much more natural. Try it...doesn't it feel gooood?

ESDF puts your middle finger too far to the right on the e, unless you angle the keyboard.

I would make WASD default, simply because its the norm. Make esdf pre configed.

ESDF

When I first opened up the T2 manual and saw the key config I was horrified; but after giving it a week or so, I was totally hooked. It allows so many more keys to be accessable in a more logical way.

Not to mention, for those that use a keyboard, the correct way, it's a natural fit! :)

ESDF just feels too weird.

My fingers have actually carved out more rounded indentations in the WADS keys.

you know what would be really cool for newbs installing T:V, if you could offer a choice of like 10 different config setups for different types of keyboards, or for players who use the arrow keys, etc.

my 0 cents

wasd cuz its easier to reach control, alt, and shift without stretching. id rather give up the 3 extra keys esdf give and be more comfortable going for ctrl alt and shift because those keys will give me the most options overall. not everything will require a quick 1 key press, so i dont have a problem assigning multiple keys to them.

When T2 came out, I tried both. With my keyboard, I can hit Control, Shift, and Tab with almost the same motion from ESDF as from WASD.

If you're selling this game to experienced FPS vets, go with WASD. Most FPSers are so bent on WASD they won't change to ESDF.

If you're selling this game to regular folks, go with ESDF. It'll be easier for them to understand home-row configuration than the crazy WASD configuration.

WASD is just an archaic control scheme left over from FPSs that forced everyone to use Shift, Control, and Alt for things like strafe and crouch. Now that we've got 5 button mice and most keyboards put Control/Shift in easy-to-reach locations, you don't need to cram your hand on WASD anymore.

Ya, I posted something like that ealier.. definately go WASD for default. Everyone knows it.. Mass appeal = WASD. Don't add another hurdle for an already complicated game.

There's only a handful (evident by the poll), that have been enlightened to the wonder that is ESDF. Maybe T:V-2 will be ready for ESDF.
