Thrax Panda 12-22-2003, 02:48 PM I use a mouse racing wheel combination. The mouse is on free look, the pedals move forward and backward, the wheel strafes, and horn activates the voice bind: "Move please!"
You laugh, but I played Starsiege with pedals, a joystick, and a mouse.
JohnnyX 12-22-2003, 02:48 PM It's all preference, people who use WASD are just anal about moving over, there is no reason not too unless you can't reach the far keys with your diminuitive hands. ESDF is exactly the same thing distance-wise, it's just one key over. It gives you three more keys on the left to work with (W,Q,A) as well as allowing you to more easily hit control and shift with your pinky if you have large hands.
WASD is for small handed wussies. I'm not even a big guy, but I have large manly mitts.
I've had various configs (including one of the wierdest T1 numpad control schemes ever), and WASD and ESDF are both equally simple to use. If T2 got anything right it was the controls. It was very intuitive and most of my binds were slight changes to the default T2 config.
Colosus 12-22-2003, 02:49 PM How the fuck are you going to press p with one hand on the mouse?
My hands take up over half the keyboard.
But in actuality, I use shift-p to drop pack so I do use it.

wtf
ctrl-R is pack drop
Theta 12-22-2003, 02:51 PM you can't hit the control and shift key with wasd? like woah

Ummm.. I have HUGE hands. Ask Thrax about me bitching about straight keyboards compared to ergonomic ones. I use WASD because that is where I am comfortable. 10+ years using the same thing tends to make someone that way.
I even use WASD as my home row when typing. Fingers on WASD, shift, space.
KillerONE 12-22-2003, 02:51 PM I'd say leave the default WASD, so the masses will feel comfortable.. all other games use WASD, so alienating new comers to Tribes would be a bad thing.
On the other hand, as long as you make BIG graphics and inserts and FLASHING LIGHTS letting them know the default is different, with all the stuff that you need to do in Tribes, using a config that is more suited to lots of button presses (ESDF) it may be better to get them on the right track in the first place.
Tough call. (About which to use, as it's quite obvious ESDF is superior in terms of use, but introduces a small ADDITIONAL learning curve to an already CURVY Tribes game) :)
K-Rex 12-22-2003, 02:51 PM On a standard keyboard, the nipples are on the F and the J. Unless you're using an f'ing macintosh.
Sorry sorry, I'm at work using a Mac so I got confused.
You get the point though.
rainbowsky 12-22-2003, 02:51 PM I refuse to believe you can strafe right and press shift-p at the same time (with correct fingering).
Colosus 12-22-2003, 02:52 PM wtf
ctrl-R is pack drop
Ctrl-R is nothing. Ctrl is my TS bind.
did you not read my theory on colosus' keybinds. sigh, newbies

I used to use ctrl-p, but now I use ctrl-f. Too time-consuming to try to hit p with your left hand, or to take your hand off the mouse to do it.

I didn't know I had to. Never had the need. Thanks for your concern. But in this arguement, you can't do that using esdf either. So your point is moot.
Falhawk 12-22-2003, 02:53 PM anyone who uses esdf is just plain sick and wrong
CTRL should be a key modifier for games. IE, if you've got throw mine as w (I do) then ctrl-w should be full force. It's logical.
anyone who uses esdf is just plain sick and wrong
Falhawk the master of the tribes universe everybody
anyone who uses esdf is just plain sick and wrong
