Yeah, I'm sure that was the same problem with the dead stops in the T2 engine.
There were tress that we couldn't see, and the Devs forgot to put in an option to make them visible.

Decorations like grass/etc, only work in certain games (as in whether or not people would turn them on, frame rate impact or not). To give an example of a game it doesen't work on, look at Savage. You can have lots of grass around, but then you won't see land mines worth shit. Wheras you can turn grass off and see them just about clear as day. The question is, who the hell would turn on grass in a situation like that? Not anyone competitive that's for sure.

Decorations either have to be mandatory, or made so they don't effect gameplay when they're on. Otherwise you'll just have players who don't know any better getting screwed by people magically seeing alot less shrubs/grass/whatever on their screen. (Note: I say screwed in the lightest sense since of course they could turn it off).

I doubt that the devs would make grass mandatory - that would cut out a good size chunk of people running older video cards who would want to turn it off for better framerates.

Perhaps the best way to deal with it is with smarter map design - less grass on ski routes, etc... I can already see some noob "hiding" in grass, wondering why he keeps getting wasted

Whoa.... dude.

Seems a shame to have to turn that off....
Because everyone will be turning them off just for some kind of "advantage" be it Framerate, or other...

you can always enjoy all the pretty grass in single player. enjoy the scenery....watch julia frolic through the nice grass...maybe pick some flowers.

then in multiplayer turn that shit off cuz its gametime.

I'm not a fan of "win at any cost" gameplaying.

I want the visual experience of awesome graphics, while I get owned.

If I wanted to play with stick figures on a single colored field, I would dig out my old Atari 2600 and play Combat.

Right now I think MPgame design is outstripping realtime graphics generation slightly. (hence the need to turn the damn things off even for top of the line cards to get effective framerates).

Imagine Tribes being played on today's graphics cards. You'd have every graphics option turned up to MAX and still have decent (or stellar) framerates.

Too bad most graphics tweaking is "manual". Even "Low-Med-High" settings allow you to cut it to bare minimum. If it were automatic, and the program tweaked your graphics settings to give you a solid 30 Fps. That way those that NEEDED to turn it down had it done automatically... those that have the power to spare, get the nice graphics that they paid for by buying those expensive cards.
