AGP 1x compatible video cards

My Brother just wants something better than his TNT2 :-P
On the cheapest buget ever, but all the newer cards seem to say AGP 2x and 4x, are they still able to be used in an 1x board?

spoke to soon, typed yes then dug out the old mb manual of my old 400 pII mackine that i thought was 1x but its 2x. so im not sure.
