I just built new computer, really nice really fast, everything works....except the internet, the thing i need the most.

It has an onboard 10/100 ethernet and ive done everything to get it working (done it many times at lans helping other people) it doesnt work.

so then i try making old comp 10.0.0.1 and new comp 10.0.0.2 which we do for lanning without internet, and the computer acts like the cable isnt plugged in. when i plug it in from the modem, the reddish lights come on at least but i dont get any packets recieved.

tried all the things in network connections like automatic ip, etc.
also have been in dos doing the ipconfig renew and what not

dunno what its doing

oh yeah, i put in an NIC from my old comp that worked and it does same thing, which i especially found stange when i did the 10.0.0.1 thing and it acted like cable was unplugged.

thanks

sounds like you

A) Don't have a router

B) Use a crossover cable to go from one computer to another?

do you have other cat5 (regular) cables?

do you have a router or switch or hub?

sorry for late response. no i do not have a switch router or anything, i will get one later. and i am using regular cat 5 so now i realize that is why my little lan didnt work. but when i go straight from cable modem into old comp, it works right away, then i switch over to the new one that i have double checked has same setting for tcp/ip and network card and it tries to detect proxy settings but it cant.

going to try making a lan with the hub i have to see if that works now

ok, so when i use my hub and make a little lan using my own ips, it does work and i can ping each of the computers....but i still cant get online.

In terms of "online" you mean what? No websites or no connection at all? Do you have all your DNS settings set right? If you have a dynamic IP do you have DHCP turned on?

What motherboard do you have?
Did you install the drivers?
Is your 10/100 port enabled in the bios?

So...

Are you trying to connect your modem to whatever hub you're using?

Cause... you can't do that.

Your broadband modem has to be directly connected to one of the PCs. If you've got two NICs in the host PC and know how to setup Internet Connection Sharing, you're welcome to try and go that route.

The easy way is to get a switch.

you can do that fine if your ISP has provided you with multiple IPs.
