well i woke up today hearing a loud popping noise comming from my comp.. It was turning itself on and off and i smelled smoke.

So i quickly unplug the shit and take the power supply out. THing smelled like burnt asshole. anyway. I go get a new power supply.. hook it up.. and now my comp wont boot past IDE search.. is there anything i can do? This mechine is my baby.. i seriously hope it can be fixed easily.

if your power supply went that badly, it could be one or several of many things... remove stuff bit by bit and see what happens. swap in known good parts... (this is a bit risky now since you don't know what went bad and you might break the new part with an old bad part)

Brings back memories of last month...

Wife's PSU pops, smells entire room up with horrid burning PCB smell that I've come to know and love.

All components dead.

All harddrives.

All cards.

Everything.

Dead.

:(

Good luck.

Ok well havent come far. I noticed that my IDE light stays on and it keeps freezing on IDE search. However, when i disconnect all IDE devices everything else seems to work.. The only problem is this doesnt make the computer runable. I've tried different ribbon cables and different hard drives ect.. i just got this goddamn motherboard so im praying to gods i dont even believe in that this isnt as serious as its seeming to be.

Good troubleshooting so far.

Throw an old HDD in it, test with that. If it doesn't boot from there, you can assume the IDE controller is blown and start shopping for a new mobo.

k i found an old 2 gig HDD, it found it on the IDE search.

Im guessing since the other hard drives i tried were all originally part of my computer. That all my HDD's got blown along with the power supply. I'll have to shop for a new HDD.. omg i almost would have rathered losing hte MB over my HDD"s though :hrm:

This situation begs for an important question. I know that most power supplies have a fuse inside of them. Is this fuse to protect the PSU or the PC components?
