Index errors at startup?

This is the second time I've gotten this error as I boot up. It goes a little something like this:
Correcting error in index $I30 for file 5416.
Correcting error in index $I30 for file 5416.
Sorting index for $I30 in file 5416.
Correcting error in index $I30 for file 5443.
Correcting error in index $I30 for file 5443.
Sorting index for $I30 in file 5443.

And it repeats this for files: 5503, 5505, 5625, 5626, 5628, 6618, 7641, 7722, 40527, 40550, 40551.

After it goes through these, it starts spamming:
Recovering orphaned file x.
Recovering orphaned file x.
Recovering orphaned file x.
Recovering orphaned file x.
Recovering orphaned file x.

Where every x is a different file name/path. Maybe does 30-40 of these. Then it blinks a screen that says it completed repairs to drive C, reboots. The first time it did this, it booted up fine. Right now, it took an extremely long time to get to the XP splash screen and it hung when it seemed to be going to the desktop (black screen) with the HDD light on. I've rebooted it a second time, and it still hangs at that point, so I'm just waiting it out this time.

I have Windows XP home, a Maxtor 40GB harddrive, an AMD 2600+ processor, a Biostar MB (don't know model offhand), and AWARD BIOS (latest version I believe). Hard dirve isn't too old, either. Maybe a couple years.

Does anyone have any clue what might be the cause of this? Maybe a bad harddrive or corrupted windows files? Let me know if you need more information.

Thanks in advance
