Problem with playing Video Files in Winxp

Everytime i try playing an avi in windows media player, or in any media player ive downloaded(around 10) it plays it in slow motion in a way. Its like the video is going but it skips and jumps around while it plays slowly. This happens with every avi file i play in any media player.

With divx files, i cant even play them in anything else but the Divx player. I try opening it in windows media player and other media players only to get some error saying

The exception Illegal Instruction
An attempt was made to execute and illegal instruction
(0xc000001d) occurred in the application at location 0x027f3181
Ok to terminate program
Cancel to debug the program

Ive tried every fucking thing under the sun including deleting and reinstalling and even reformatting. Ive updated all my shit whenever it needs to be and this never seems to work.

Its not a virus either, ive done multiple scans and make sure no fucked up shit gets on this comp.

Im running Windows XP SP1 with Windows Media Player9 and the latest version of divx.

Somebody help :(

Maybe you need different or updated codecs.

Maybe your HD is really slow and can't handle it? Or maybe you should hit the turbo button on the front of your case. ;)

Here's a few tweaks that should get that badboy running right..

Some of this may not be correct as i'm away from my computer (at work comp, winnt)

1) Disable get licenses automatically in wmp9 preferences.

2) Uninstall any bad codec packs *Nimo*

3) Install defilerpak - http://hellninjacommando.com/defilerpak/

4) get a new FFDshow - http://cutka.szm.sk/ffdshow/

that should solve most problems, There are other fixes, just not at home right now to trouble shoot for ya.

I cant find where to get rid of old shitty codecs in wmp9. Where exactly do I have to go to do that?

ok, ive fucked around with it and now its playing divx files. the only problem im still having is the video playing slow. Its not having trouble playing it but its like its literally being played in slow motion.

Btw comp specs:
AMDk6 400mhz
256ram
32mb TNT2

Yea its pretty shitty but its an old pos laptop. Im almost positive its not my comp and that theres something else wrong because everything else works fine except when playing avi's in windows media player because they play in slow motion.

have you updated the drivers all the way?

what motherboard? maybe you need chipset drivers too.

and i doubt you can play nice sized (640x480 or thereabouts) divx files that well. a celeron 300a@464 might not even keep up with it and that definitely is better than your system.

it might simply be a case of your computer sucking.

and no, a k6 400 is not comparable to a P2 or Celeron @ 400 or 450.

AMD chips back then had weak FPUs.

also, try this for your divx codec (no need to uninstall anything)

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.n et/ffdshow/ffdshow-20030523.exe?download

and this for your media player:
