When hosting my own server on SH, lookin straight ahead from the top of the base I get about 90'ish fps..looking straight up I get 200+

When I join a server I get about 30-50'ish fps on average, what I wanna know is how come my fps is so low? I currently have the Catalyst 3.6 drivers installed should that be good? Vsync is off.

My spec's are
Tbird 1.3ghz
512 Ram

my processor isnt good, but shouldnt I atleast be getting a more stable fps? or is it my processor.

with a 1.3 you should be doing better than 30-50 fps.

32bit color?

hrm.... well, the fact that you CAN get a higher FPS in single player mode seems to suggest that your video card is functioning properly, and that the bottleneck lies either in your network card taking up processing power for some reason (very possible) or your CPU is just the bottleneck.

ive tried both 16bit and 32bit..no diffrence.

Invar, how would I find out if my network card is using cpu power? or the other problem u suggested.

Im gonna try installing those other drivers too and trying it on a diffrent game.

well, honestly, at 1024x768 in 16bit color with that card, you should be kicking ass. i had a geforce2 gts 32mb and i was able to run tribes in 1024x768 @ 16bpp and get 220 staring at the corner on single player training CTF, and on average 70-100 in game depending on number of players and amount of explosions, etc.

so that's definitely not normal.

what type of network card do you have?

also, your bios settings might not be optimized. what motherboard/chipset is that?

also, what sound card?

googling for your NIC reveals that it's based on the tulip chipset, which should be fine as far as CPU utilization goes.

soundcard is built into the motherboard..its just a soundblaster I think..not sure.

go here and download the omega 3.7 drivers follow the instructions to do so like uninstalling your other ones first blah blah
http://www.omegacorner.com/index_ati.html

then go here and optimize your mobo settings for you radeon 9800
http://www.omegacorner.com/bios.htm

only thing i disagree with in his bios settings is aperture size :
AGP aperture size : 128 (USE 64MB IF YOU EXPERIENCE TEXTURE CORRUPTION)

you might wanna play around with that figure to see what suits your pc best . I myself use 256mb and found its best.
