Halide 09-06-2003, 12:01 AM I got a 10 GB samsung spinpoint, with like one or two bad sectors :cat: BlodBath-VuP- 09-06-2003, 11:02 AM all hdds have bad sectors. newer ones just have an intelligent controller that senses them and doesn't let you read/write to em. iNVAR 09-06-2003, 02:24 PM all hdds have bad sectors. newer ones just have an intelligent controller that senses them and doesn't let you read/write to em. not really. hard drives have ALWAYS had bad sectors on them, you just don't realize it because they are marked bad at the factory permanently. it's a manufacturers defect list and it's on every single drive. newer hard drives do NOT have intelligent controllers that sense them. what they do have is they have SMART (Self Monitoring, Analysis And Reporting Technology) built in which is a way of warning you when an impending hard drive failure will occur. bad sectors are marked via software or BIOS firmware (mostly only SCSI drives have this available via the SCSI controller's firmware) gummeh, you can find hard drives in that price range and size after rebate from a lot of places now... actually, not that small. i think the smallest you can get is about 40GB for $40 or so after rebate. the trick is you have to be quick and catch the deal. i usually watch out for postings from http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/categories.cfm?catid=18 i got my maxtor 160GB for $92 shipped a while back, but i did see a 40GB WD w/8MB cache 7200rpm for about $45 too. | ||
