How are they going to sell HL2 and what is bad about it?

From what I heard, HL2 will be available both in a box on the shelf and from Steam as a purchasable download.

So wait, are they charging MORE than average for the multiplayer version, or discounting the singleplayer-only?

skeletor is a fucking idiot and the system they are selling HL2 in is great.

they are selling hl2 with multiplayer and singleplayer for normal 50 dollar price. However if valve releases tf2, you'll still have to pay for that (they're not saying mods cost money, there will still be tons of free mods; but official valve mods will cost a small price)

and they are selling singleplayer only hl2 for a discount price, with the option to download the multiplayer off steam for a price if you decide you want it.

OR

you can pay 10 dollars a month (with no initial fee) and download hl2 with multiplayer off steam, BUT you get all future valve expansions or official mods (like CS2 since they own it) for free.

That's not the issue. The issue is that Valve is setting up a pay-for-play system for $9.95 a month. If you keep doing it even after you pay off half-life, you get free content updates such as TF and CS. It's fucking gay. But you can still run it without paying monthly. But it's still a step in the P2P direction.

However, this is obviously not going to happen to Vengeance (then again it's a year and a few months off :( ).

how is this "step in the p2p direction" negative?

if valve is going to be giving you all that content for free with this subscription then i'm pretty sure it'll be WORTH the 10 dollars a month, unlike most mmorpg's. Also, nobody is forcing you to p2p, it's just an option, and it's not going to influence other games because they don't have the resources to do this.

Blizzard doesn't have the resouces to do this? Epic? id?
So when do they stop developing content, do you think they're going to make a notice "We're not developing content any more, stop paying your $10 a month." It's stupid. I know it's an option, but the point is some people will be fooled into that bullshit. You're not going to save money, but you keep them funded no matter what. Chances are you are going to lose money. How many mods are you going to buy and play? CS, TF? What after that? Some shitty mod they put together to keep the "content" coming? When otherwise you'd buy the game for $50, then buy the content additions for $30 or whatever. I see no need for this monthly charge bullshit.

you never know what content they'll put out, i guess we'll just have to wait and see.

How does the $10/month thing prevent me from paying for one month, D/Ling SP/Mp versions and then canceling

For some reason I still don't feel right about a "purchaseable download." If I purchase something I want something physical to show for it. I need something besides 0's and 1's to show for what I've bought I guess.

One thing I would be interested in would be an online ordering system (not necessicarily for at release, but down the road) where you could order your hardcopy, and download the program to use right away, but you still get a real product in the mail a few days later.

Thanks for clarifying. I definitely won't be opting for the P2P.

Forums, special servers that only members of valve may access.

Having separate boxes might not be a bad idea. For new combers that might not understand Tribes, this could help them get in and understand the game a little more.

Why are so many of you like obssessed with extras and stuff.. I think they should sell T:V like most other games.. Then if you want extra you should pay for extra or download extra or whatever. Lets try to keep things simple, therefor keeping prices down a bit.. I dont want to pay 100$ because im getting some extra stuff that i dont need. Like someone stupid idea of an action figure (god forbid that happening)..

GAH! You don't get it for free, YOU PAY FOR IT. 10 fucking bucks a month. There's absolutly no garantees TF2 or CS2 will be out in 5 months.

for clarity... hl2 is being sold in a couple ways...

1. hl2 in box, just sp
2. hl2 in box, with mp (nobody knows what the mp is like)
3. hl2 in collector's addition box, with mp
4. hl2 downloaded through Steam, as part of ongoing "valve" subscription

it isnt pay to play at all, however, if you do the Steam/Valve subscription you get to merely download all the new products as they roll-out (whatever products those are, however frequently they might come). right now, it's all hype and speculation. valve would really need to tell people more about the future, if they expect folks to invest in the future with them.

it's really just an e-business model which screws Sierra, and gives those who have faith in Valve a way to just download games straight from them... with an investment/commitment over time.

it's interesting, to say the least.

at the core, i think the idea of being able to buy a game for download is a HUGE gambit. otherwise, i just find it remarkable cuz it goes around the middlemen publishers, and also marks the end of the "buy one, get all free" era of HL.
