Okay, I have read that if I freeze a hard drive in a freezer, if it were having friction issues, would the freezing actually compact the parts enough to reduce friction for long enough to retrieve data without causing data loss? I know it sounds kind of stupid, but, in theory it makes sense. Just thought I'd ask for an opinion before deciding on actually doing so.

make sure you put it in a ziplock bag. i've done that and been able to retrieve data.
It has worked for others. So no, it's not just a myth. Give it a shot.

It worked for me... but I had to let it warm up a little, the drive would not even turn on until I let it get warmed up. After that, it ran smooth, and I moved ~9GB off of it cleanly. No problems from it.
