school has some older systems they use for dos and bsd for sale;
P2 200 mhz
64 mb ram
NIC
4-6 gig removeable HD
onboard video and sound
$50
im not looking to use it for anyform of gaming, but i wanna start learning how to assemble shit, upgrade the mobo, etc for $50 thats not bad, could throw in a cheap ASUS board, get a cheap GeForce2, etc etc
decent price or what
iNVAR 08-20-2003, 03:20 PM no
iNVAR 08-20-2003, 04:11 PM you asked if it was worth the money, i said no. how am i supposed to respond to "why?" it's not worth the money, that's it.
if you want to learn how to assemble a system or something, next time you have to upgrade your own computer, do it yourself.
ChaoStar 08-20-2003, 04:12 PM I say it's a good price, but don't put too much money into it. Just get a cheap tv-out card and turn it into an emulator/rom box.
edit: that's what I would do at least.

Well, that's why I wanna get some cheap other barebones system to work on.
Say I upgrade this one right? I know jack about hardware and how it all plugs in, hooks together etc So if I go to upgrade something and end up fucking something up on this system, I'm without a working PC. Whereas if I get a second system to use, it can be broken, fucked up etc
I'm just curious if that was overpriced, since i havent ever bought a barebones system
iNVAR 08-20-2003, 04:18 PM Paying $50 for this really isn't worth it. $50 may not seem like much when you're talking about hundreds of dollars for a top end system, but put it in perspective: I recently gave away a K6-2 450 with 128MB PC133 memory and mobo for free, also gave away an ATI Rage 128. I have a network card sitting around, as well as an ISA sound card.
Don't bother paying someone for it, people will toss their shit out, you just have to know where to look. People all over TW might have stuff to give away.
I'm surprised your school is trying to sell that piece of shit and isn't just junking it or giving it away. They should be ashamed of themselves.
$20 would be "worth the money".
hmmm
it also comes with 15 inch CRT monitor, case, power supply, whole bare bones thing (plus the monitor) and thats not really worth more than $20 to learn/practice with? Just curious, if its truly not I'll look else where for something cheaper
iNVAR 08-20-2003, 07:21 PM Well, toss in the monitor and that's different, it might be worth it.
It's up to you. Personally, I would never drop the money on something like that. I seriously think your money would be better spent just saving up for a computer upgrade some time in the future and then doing the upgrade yourself. You'll learn plenty from that alone.
You don't need a POS system to work on.
Justin Time 08-20-2003, 07:22 PM With monitor it is worth it to me. I would use it as Folding machine or a linux box. Doesnt take to much to run webservers. ;)
