Vid card resolution switch reboots

Situation: My brother has a 2.4GHz P4 with a GF4 4200 (gainward). MSI 648 Max mobo, onboard NIC, SB Audigy, etc.

Anyways, a few days ago, he decided to run Windows Update (he has XP SP1) and get all the hotfixes and installed DX9. Then he upgraded his video driver to the 44.03's. After he installed the video card drivers, his computer would sort of reboot right when it switched from the loading Windows XP screen to the login screen. I say sort of, because the monitor turns off and it doesn't actually reboot (at least as far as I can tell, because there's no video). Safe mode works fine.

So my first thought that there was some oddity in this driver revision. So I switched it back to the default Windows driver, and it seemed to work. Then it happened again, and after it happened once, it never worked after that. So I tried the most recent drivers from Gainward's site, same deal.

So I did a system restore before he installed the hotfixes, DX9, and installed the 22.80 drivers that came on the video card installation CD. Still no deal.

I can't see how it could possibly be a hardware problem, because it's too much of a coincidence for my tastes. So does anybody know a fix for this?

i bet his refresh rate is set too high. does numlock work when the monitor goes blank?

boot into safe mode and force the refresh rate down

Aye. Safe Mode...

Look at drivers and stuff.

vge. It's nothing that simple. If it were, I wouldn't be posting about it here. And I just booted it into Safe Mode again, and it gave an error report about nv4_disp.dll. Once again, seems to be the drivers, but I've tried 4 different kinds.

Ended up being a bad stick of RAM. I considered that highly unlikely considering it was a Crucial stick that is like 2 months old. Oh well.
