The chaingun is generally regarded as a weapon that requires less skill than other weapons for close to medium range fighting. The potential for abuse (ping, interpolate, etc.) makes it fairly un-fun to fight against.
I WOULD assert that the chaingun is more skillful for fast capper chasing, however.
Recognizing this, is it really required in Tribes? If not, what might replace it? How else might you enable the D to pursue fast moving cappers at medium to long range?

Chaingun is the weapon of choice for air-to-air combat. without it, there would be a lot less tactical diversity...the occasional MA and a lot of jumping around trying to stay in the air longer.
That being said, whenever I duel it's always without cg..too cheap..

... What would the arena players do without the chaingun?
If they take the chain gun out of the game it will lose a lot of it's crowd, i hate to say it but it's true. Join a pub and see how oftenly used it is. It's probably the most used weapon unfortunatly. I say reduce the damage on it or make it a lot harder ot him with it. The reason the chain gun is so widely used is because it's easy to make hits with. If you reduce the damage, you'll make veteran members happy and newcomers pleased they still have an accurate weapon. :} just my opinion.

Yep.
You have something for air to air that doesn't require the skill of an MA. It just needs to be balanced for today's game.

Is it just me, or did the CG from T1 seem a lot more balanced?

The CG from TV looks quite original and pretty cool

The chain gun is a good weapon for ctf. I think it was a bit overpowerd in t2, but an there IS a need for a weapon that can hit in air.
For dueling and arena the chaingun is a totally overpowered to the point where people either don't use it at all or just use it less because it just isn't fun anymore. I hope the re-balance weapon damage for the differnt game types. Hopefully Arena and Dual will be in the box.
For T:V CTF I think a chaingun is needed. It's a differnt dynamic when its all about team work and the flag.
