We all want T:V to be good enough for game of the year title. So what is it up against anyways? I grabbed some titles from gamespy's release tracker (it didn't have Vengeance, can you imagine?) just to take a look. I tried to stick with ones I thought might actually be popular. Here's the list, then I'll run it down with personal commentary.
• TRON 2.0 August 26, 2003
• Half-Life 2 September 30, 2003
• Horizons Q3 2003
• Homeworld 2 Q3 2003
• Deus Ex: Invisible War October 2003
• Thief III Q4 2003
• EverQuest II Q4 2003
• Worms 3D Q4 2003
• Medal of Honor: Allied Assault: Breakthrough Q4 2003
• Unreal Tournament 2004 Q4 2003
• Delta Force - Black Hawk Down: Team Sabre Q4 2003
• Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne Q4 2003
• Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour Q4 2003
• Halo 2 (Xbox) Q1 2004
• World of Warcraft Q1 2004
• Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault Q1 2004
• Final Fantasy XI Q1 2004
• Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow Q1 2004
• Battlefield Vietnam Q1 2004
• Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines Q2 2004
• Sam & Max Freelance Police Q2 2004
• Operation Flashpoint 2 Q3 2004
• Doom III 2004
• Quake IV 2004
• The Matrix Online 2004
• Sid Meier's Pirates! 2004
--=&=--
• TRON 2.0 August 26, 2003
Just another Quake mod. I played the demo and I didn't really find anything special about it. It was like playing quake with a frisbee. It looked ok, but I don't think it will have a very long lifespan in terms of community.
• Half-Life 2 September 30, 2003
The title to end all titles. EVERYone's going to buy this. I doubt it will be a mediocre game either. I think our best bet is for it to come out in 2003, take GotY and then come T:V people might be in the market for a new game.
Or maybe it doesn't live up to the hype. In that case everyone will still buy it, but it just won't last as long (until counter-strike 2 expansion pack gets sold).
• Horizons Q3 2003
Another mmorpg that probably won't take off. Its engine looks pretty, but most mmorpgs are just the same thing, and anyone who's into that is already playing one.
• Homeworld 2 Q3 2003
Looks lame -- rts games suck. It'll probably pretty cool actually, just not my cup of tea. It's a differnt community so it probably won't interfere with Vengeance too much. Also the starcraft fanboys have been looking for a new game since they were let down by wc3, so it might take off.
• Deus Ex: Invisible War October 2003
If it's anything like the first deus ex it will rock. Lucky for us it's a single player game, and by the time T:V is out they just may be looking for another single player game.
• Thief III Q4 2003
This could be pretty good, but I think T:V will be better. Theif is really like the black relection of tribes anyways -- sneak around slowly, kill from the shadows. It should be rather unique gameplay when compared to your average shooter, and that's what the market needs imo.
• EverQuest II Q4 2003
I only list it b/c...well come on, it's everquest. These guys are pretty fucked up. They won't buy a tribes game.
• Worms 3D Q4 2003
We should all buy this anyways b/c it looks like it will kick ass. I personally hope it outsells HL2 and is awarded GotY by most major sites. That's probably just a pipedream tho :/
• Medal of Honor: Allied Assault: Breakthrough Q4 2003
How many of these games are these guys gonna make? Probably only the ww2 buffs make it this far in the series.
• Unreal Tournament 2004 Q4 2003
I have faith T:V will be better than this game. UT is like the renegades of video games imo.
• Delta Force - Black Hawk Down: Team Sabre Q4 2003
Not a threat.
• Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne Q4 2003
It could be cool, but it'll be another play and forget payne title I'm sure.
• Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour Q4 2003
You know how I feel about rts games.
• Halo 2 (Xbox) Q1 2004
And oh shit, we're in 2004. Will Halo2 win it? It comes out early -- and like the oscars, the early ones are easily forgotten. Personally I think halo is overhyped, but I'm sure the xbox fanboys will proclaim it as Jesus of the electronic industry and refuse to play Tribes3 b/c it "rips off" their game (yes I am a tribes fanboy, so fuck off).
• World of Warcraft Q1 2004
The 1 mmorpg that might be good. Same old combat, but it's Blizzard. We can expect them to release solid titles. Although it's hard to image an mmorpg with a stable release, I'll bet they can do it.
• Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault Q1 2004
Wtf? Another one?
• Final Fantasy XI Q1 2004
Personally, I like final fantasy, I would probably play this if I had the money. But I can't see myself doing a pay2play when the reason I love the games is b/c of their stories.
• Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow Q1 2004
Eh, I don't know why I put this on the list. Looks like just another expansion pack.
• Battlefield Vietnam Q1 2004
Looks like a bf1942 mod. Outdoor enviormants sans the speed. I hope some of the people considering this like sci-fi and catch wind of T:V.
• Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines Q2 2004
I forgot what this is about, so whatever.
• Sam & Max Freelance Police Q2 2004
Now sam and max do kick ass -- but there's no multiplayer, so it's short term gaming.
• Operation Flashpoint 2 Q3 2004
Will probably be another sleeper hit. I think the battle field games need to worry more than the tribes games tho.
• Doom III 2004
It'll probably have a pretty good multiplayer deathmatch community, but teams will be small. People will look for team games elsewhere I think.
• Quake IV 2004
It'll have a good single player story, but I'll bet it lacks the freedom of movement in tribes. It'll also be branded as a Halo clone by the xboxers.
• The Matrix Online 2004
Sounds stupid, probably is. It's like trying to be a jedi master in SWG only there can only be 1...But seriously, The Matrix is about action, unless this plays a bit like planetside I cannot imagine it being fun.
• Sid Meier's Pirates! 2004
I have no idea what this is about, but Sid Meier makes good games and pirates kick ass so all of a sudden I'm excited.
Ok, so it looks like Halo2 may be the biggest obstacle in T:V's way to becomming GotY. Hopefully T:V will be a kick ass game. If it lives up to my expectations, I honestly believe it can beat Halo2. The big thing seems to be interactive scripted events. This is what I noticed with HL2 and Halo2 e3 movies. Doom 3 and Quake 4 look nice, but I recall looking nice doesn't win you the title. Quake 3 looked very nice, but UT had more polish and many reviews placed it above q3. Tribes Veangence seems to rely on it's freedom of movement, and from the looks of the upcomming titles, this feature is unique.
Thoughts?
