Top Gun 07-23-2003, 04:34 PM Im just curious whether a tag system will be implemented at all by T:V. I know the developers have already expressed how much they hated the t2 browser, chat, and email cause its like reinventing the wheel. So, is there a simple way to do a tag system or are we just gonna see ppl adding it to their names?
Azra3l 07-23-2003, 04:43 PM I sort of like the tag invite type thing, it pretty much prevents false tagging.
Conversely, the browser can fall into Dave G's asshole.
Sir Lucius 07-23-2003, 04:46 PM tribes 2 tag system allowed for no fun in your name or theme tribes. There's probably a much better way of preventing smurfing -- like a unique id system that the servers can log.
Zoolooman 07-23-2003, 05:01 PM I hate the tag system. I prefer a large name space (32 characters) with which to craft my moniker.

I'm hoping there will be some way to identify every player uniquely on a global basis (for my own pet projects of course. Hey Thrax, guess what I want to talk to you about at UVA ;)).
i believe it's been said that they want to offer a lot of the features of the browser (unique accounts, distinct tags, etc etc) but they don't want to have it run from within the game. Meaning, it would likely be managed from the official game website or something like that, instead of from within the game itself.
Dark|Dragon 07-23-2003, 08:35 PM That sounds like it would own. Create your account through the website, then log into the game with it.
[57th]cneal 07-23-2003, 09:03 PM I don't really like the global nick register system since you may not be the only one that wants that specific nick. However for the purpose of identifying VIP of a server, I do think that a type of IRC nickserv should be added to T:V servers so that those VIP can prevent others from using their nicks. Those people may include IRC admins, clan members and friends of the admin, members etc.

Yea, that's a good idea. Easy server mod too even if it's not in.

Don't quote me on this but I *think* I remember reading one of the devs say that each account will have an individual ID assigned to it. You could still use whatever nick you want, but it's possible to just easily permaban a person, or whatever else you want to use it for.
Top Gun 07-24-2003, 11:54 AM Yeah, I remember thrax saying something like that somewhere. He was talking about altough he liked the name thrax other ppl might want the name thrax, and he believed everyone should be able to name themselves anything. Then, he talked about how each player would have a number, probably like a t2 guid.
Got Haggis? 07-24-2003, 12:02 PM so you could create a theme tribe where everyone had the same exact name, heh.
Zoolooman 07-24-2003, 12:10 PM No. Most servers add a .(insert number) to a players name when they join a server and someone already has that name.
So if Thrax joins a server with Thrax on it, the server assigns, while he is on that server, a .1 to his name, making him Thrax.1.
If another joins, it becomes Thrax.2
Etc.
If a name is SOOO long that it fills up the name box, and then someone joins, it cuts off the last two or three characters and shoves in it's own .number.
Sir Lucius 07-24-2003, 12:33 PM identical llama
Shinigami 07-24-2003, 01:06 PM It already works in t1 with the default fonts. The "1", "l", and "i" are all the same character.
Limbo 07-24-2003, 03:26 PM I think they should just have you register your nickname and login, but you have the ability to add characters to your name, eg: tags, etc. But you do not have the ability to modify your name, eg: "John Doe" will stay as "John Doe" but you can add letters to it, and they will appear in a different color.
Then drop all the other bullshit that was in T2. This should prevent smurfing well enough.
Sir Lucius 07-24-2003, 03:56 PM I like the VIP idea more. Name reservations should be left up to the people who run the servers.
Shinigami 07-24-2003, 07:10 PM Half the fun of t1 was being able to play as whatever you want. Every time I heard a really idiotic sounding name or phrase somewhere, it would be the next thing I pub as.
Roundhouse[iD] 07-25-2003, 12:43 AM Half lifes way is good. How you get the WON id number. it should be done like that
Dark|Dragon 07-25-2003, 10:17 AM I still say register with the website, choose name, and recieve clan invites :\
I don't want anyone else running around with Dark|Dragon. That's one of the things I liked about T2, I knew that no one else could have the same name as me.
