the spider was probably a wolf spider. It only eats insects and is innocuous.

the only good spider is a dead spider and they are even still scary then because you're not sure if they are dead or not because sometimes a shadow can hit them and it looks like a leg moved and you ask yourself hey did that leg just move maybe or maybe not. then you fucking squish it again. yeah.
